I have the same problem. I beleive that it is the pogoplug because no matter what device i try to access the movies from it does not play the mkv files. Since you have been looking into this you probably have seen the post on installing samba to the pogoplug. I have not tried it because I just got my pogoplug and dont want to brick it yet.
You should just be able to go to settings and network settings to change it. I tried to change it to pogoplug but the wd did not see the share.

Hi, I am trying to use my Pogoplug Pro as a media server to stream video and music to my WDTV Live Streaming Media Player. I am connecting to the Pogoplug as a wireless media server (rather than a network share) and everything works well for about 30 minutes. At that point, the Pogoplug disconnects from the WDTV. The WDTV can still my my Windows 7 laptop as a media server and my laptops can still access the Pogoplug. It doesn't matter if I'm streaming something or doing nothing; they still lose contact after 30 minutes. I have a 1tb Toshiba hard drive on the Pogoplug from which I've removed the sleep function (the drive would completely power off if left alone, which would mean I couldn't access it via the Pogoplug). If I reset the network connection of the WDTV, it immediately finds the Pogoplug again.
I've seen similar complaints here and elsewhere. WDTV support said it must be the Pogoplug (surprise!). One suggestion is that everything has to be on the same workgroup. Is there a way to change the workgoup name of the Pogoplug?
Thanks.
Thanks. From the reply I got from Pogoplug support, I'm assuming it's the Pogoplug's problem, not WDTV. I've considered installing Samba but I know nothing about Linux and would probably get myself into more trouble. And this isn't just mkv files; it disconnects even if nothing is being streamed. I know how to change the workgroup on the WDTV but is there anyway to assign the Pogoplug to a workgroup? Here's what Pogoplug support said:
"Thank you for contacting Pogoplug Support.
Streaming support using Pogoplug is enabled using a subset of UPnP, though not specifically DLNA. We do not use UPnP to explain streaming support because our implementation of UPnP does not makes changes to your network, opening ports and such.
We specifically mention streaming support for XBox360 and PS3 and the Seagate FreeAgent Theater+ because we have optimized for their interfaces. While the UPnP protocol we enabled should work with UPnP clients, we only guarantee compatibility by way of actual testing on XBox360, PS3 and Seagate FreeAgent Theater+.
I'm sorry I don't have any additional information to help you get up and running with your 'WDTV'."
