I've had the PP for several years now.  It used to work (kinda) as far as sharing videos with friends but everytime they "upgrade" features, it seems to kill something else.  I now can no longer share videos for friends to stream.  I can mail a link but when they click on "view now", they get a 'crossed out play icon' across the initial still frame.  Ive encoded both with handbrake and the PP's own transcoding.  Every once in a while, a video that I allow PP to transcode will play but the quality is so poor that its unwatchable.  Very frustrating. I can upload the same video to youtube and share with excellent streaming quality.  Obviously they have a better trancoding solution or something.  Pogoplug is a great concept since I like the idea of keeping the videos on an attached USB HD, but has failed in its execution- just not reliable enough to use (especially to share stuff with non-techie friends and family).  I will probably post this to support, but I think I just about give up with these guys.  Will switch to free cloud based service like skydrive from MS.  Anyone have an easy solution or advice before I finally ditch this thing?

Not wishing you any bad luck or anything, but Im glad to see that Im not the onlly one having this very same problem.  When I send a link with a video, they receive the link but when clicked on....they get the pogoplug sceen with no video.  I can send a link with photos or music and everything works like its supposed to.....sure is funny how there is always something happening when using the pogoplug....The one and only difference is that when they click on the link they get the pogoplug page but just a solid video play box.....

The problem is on the web interface side and it started since the new web UI was introduced. It has nothing to do with the device, since videos from Pogoplug Cloud are also not working. However, if you go to dockstar.pogoplug.com or goflexnet.pogoplug.com and generate link from the old interface, your friends/family will have no problem watching the videos from the link. Apparently, the new Web UI broke the function.
I wonder if Pogoplug has a QA team.

December 31, 2011 11:22 PM

livis is absolutely correct! I have also confirmed that the shared links work if I share via goflex.pogoplug.com. How is it that more people havent complained about this broken functionality; have they just given up?
More concerning for pogoplug as a viable entity is that I followed Christopher's advice and submitted a support ticket; Even though I detailed the problem and the fact that the uploaded video was encoded in m4v using h.264, I recieved a response informing me of what codecs I must use to stream video. I even sent the support team a link to my file but I guess they didn't bother to check it. This is extremely frustrating to someone who has been a supporter of the product and previously had recommended it to others. I will just be uploading videos to YouTube from now on- I can't use a product that isn't tested before release, and then doesn't seem interested in troubleshooting bugs reported by actual paying customers. Not a good business model guys.

I just wish they would fix it.....I have been a pogoplug user since the pogoplug (pink) was put up for sale. I now have the pogoplug pro. Im really disappointed on how they will not put any effort in fixing this problem which i dont think would really be a big problem. Speaking of encoding, I have actually tried everything that you could think of to get this to work...h.264 will actually work once in a great while but the video that it will stream, when it rarely does, is really grainy and and blurry. I feel the same way, if your a paying customer, you feel like you should be getting your moneys worth. Sharing with the pogoplug is the main reason that most of us bought a pogoplug in the first place.

The latest response from support stated that I must have some ports blocked. Obviously, support didn't take the time to read the part of my post where I explain that I am NOT a new pp user, it used to work, and that IT WORKS WITH THE OLD UI as detailed above. I really just don't get these guys. This is a company that can only succeed by positive word of mouth yet does little to earn it.

Hi all,

We'll also check in if there's a issue with streaming from Pogoplug Cloud as well as devices.

It's really important to contact Support. Though Brett reports a less than satisfactory experience, it's important to take these symptoms on a case by case basis because the root causes may be quite different.

Kind Regards,
Christopher

Okay, that is easy to test. I put a video file to a temp folder on Pogoplug Cloud. Yes, Pogoplug Cloud, not a pogoplug device or a PC. I generated two links, one from the new UI, the other from the old Dockstar web UI. They are both pointing to the same folder. As of 10:15 pm eastern time, Jan 6th, 2012, the link from the old UI works with IE9, though it claimed not supported. The link from the new UI gave a little red cross. Hope this is convincing. The links are:

Well what is funny, today most of the day I was able to send a link of a movie and everything worked like it was supposed to...the link was working great that was sent out to a brother in illinois. Then later this evening i noticed my icon went black for about 20 minutes....and when it eventually came back to life my links no longer worked. The links with photos continued to work like they were supposed to but anything with a movie would not work.....going to wait till morning to try it out again....

I have the same experience as you.  I have been working with support who last felt that the issue was on my HD even though you and I have both explained that it occurs with emailed links to files stored in their cloud as well.  I too find that it works if you send an invite either from dockstar or flexflet.  It also works if you collaborate the folder rather than sharing via email.  It seems pretty clear to me that there is a bug in the UI's implementation of email sharing of a video file, hopefully pp support will see this fairly soon and fix the bug.  Untill then, I am sharing videos with YouTube.

January 7, 2012 6:13 AM

Right this very minute mine seems to be working like its supposed to. I have created three different movies using Magix Movie Edit Pro with and without transitions and everything seems to be working good when sending an email link. If it continues to work like it is right now I would be happy....Ive tried it from the "cloud" and also directly from my pogoplug....the only thing that i have noticed is if i add music to a movie sometimes the sound will get a little choppy...but other than that its now working....

January 13, 2012 1:02 PM

I have never been able to get this work either. If I download the movie file in the link, I can play it. There is something incompatible with perhaps the IE browser and Safari browser on the Iphone as well. They definitely need to address this issue!

January 13, 2012 11:28 PM

Definitely an issue. I personally think is has something to do with encoding of video (maybe not all h.264 files are compatible?) but, in any event, I did send support a bunch of links to files to test and am waiting for them to get back to me. They seem genuinely interested and puzzled. When they do, I will be sure to post here.

I went to the Pogoplug website page http://my.pogoplug.com/features and downloaded the file that is shown as an example for sharing called "ziplining.mov", under the features heading:

" Instantly share all of your HD videos

Let your friends, family and colleagues watch your videos seconds after you take them. See a shared video for yourself. "

I can click the link ("See a shared video for yourself") and see the video play in my browser fine. When I tried to send an email link to myself of that downloaded file, I still get an [X] in the the picture.

So even their own file is not working. Has anyone else tried this and see if they can get this email of the same file to work?

Hi BobN2Tech

We successfully did an informal test of the link for the zipline - did you try http://ppl.ug/bfjpAjElcTA/?

If this isn't working, we want to look at this. If you haven't already, contact Support, just write support@pogoplug.com from your my.pogoplug.com email account.

Yes. That link works to stream the video. But after I down load the video to my pogoplug 4, and send a link of it to myself (or anyone else), I only see the [x] in the picture field and nothing plays (no audio either). This problem has been reported to the support and I have been getting no where. It started with unplug the drive, do a check disk, delete the .ceida file, etc, which I did. Then after 10 more emails with tech support, we're back to the start again to delete the file, etc - a full circle. My pogoplug apps on both the iphone and andriod tablet will play the file from the pogoplug without a problem, but the email link does not produce a playable file from a web browser. If I download the file it will play. So perhaps the web browser (IE9) is not working with the pogoplug to tell it to start streaming?

January 20, 2012 5:03 AM

I just tried your same procedures and got the same results....that is what has been happening to me exactly until about a week ago when for some reason when i would send the link to myself or others it would play....but, the quality was more than terrible.....it would start to play with a really bad jerky and pixelated screen, and then when the quality did start to clear up a bit it would be so grainy and jerky that you could hardly watch it. I to download that file like you did and tried to use it on my pogoplug pro and got the same results as you

Just to update this thread should others encounter the same trouble, here is the final long-awaited response from support.  They pretty much confirmed what we already knew, only pp transcoded videos can be shared via email link with the new webui.

Here is the reply:

Shimi, Feb 01 11:32 (IST):

Hello Brett,

Thank you for your ongoing patience with this matter.

Since our previous correspondence, I have further examined this matter and would like to update you about it:

Since Pogoplug recent webUI update, files which had been transcoded independently can only be shared, but would not stream via 'Send Link' feature.

For streaming supported media file via 'Send Link', you will have to upload the original file onto your Pogoplug device and allow transcode to complete itself before accessing the file.

In addition, perhaps you should find the following work around useful:

You can upload a supported media file which have been transocded by yourself and use Pogoplug 'Collaborate' feature to share it with additional users.

This feature will require your sharee to sign into a Pogoplug account for gaining access to the file, which should stream properly when accessed via 'Sharing' tab ==> 'Collaborate Folders'.

I hope this makes things a bit more clear.

Kind regards,
-Shimi

So, they finally admitted it was the new WebUI that broke the video sharing. I guess they are not interested in fixing it, since they could use this to push more people to sign in for new pogoplug accounts.

February 2, 2012 9:57 PM

I already new that the only way you could send a link to a video via the web browser was after it was transcoded..but even after that everything that I send out comes out all garbled and distorted on the receivers end. I used to brag to my friends about having a pogoplug and what it was supposed to do....but now I dont even mention it anymore as they have seen what it puts out. In fact my pogoplug pro has now started to not see any drives that are hooked up....It actually refuses to hook up....It will see my computer that i share but will not see a usb drive hooked up at all. I have shut it down, rebooted, and just about everything else you can think of to no avail. Im right at the point right now of saying this thing is more trouble than its worth. Ive hung in for over a year now with pogoplug products and not really sure why i have.....Im thinking seriously about getting a real NAS and just give up on the pogoplug....

February 3, 2012 6:24 AM

Yup. it generally works well enough for me to share files but is now just about useless for videos and is pretty flawed for music (plays one song and stops, etc). Besides the fact that it takes pp about a day to transcode a movie, it's quality ends up being far inferior to handbrakes transcodes. Using collaborate instead of a link is not what I think most users are looking for. It certainly does not look like they are intending to improve this from the response I recieved.
Much better off sharing videos with others on YouTube (as long as you don't use any copyrighted music as soundtrack) or another cloud solution.
