Hi,

I'm a month into owning a PogoPlug. It's working out well for having access to key files when I'm out and about. But I still haven't figured out how to access photos and video reliably yet.

One question, photos and video are grouped by date. But not the date of when the video was taken but by when I loaded the files onto the PogoPlug. I'd rather group my videos and pictures by topic and manage a folder structure myself. Is there anyway to do that? Or maybe I'm missing the point of organizing files by date of upload.

The device has potential. Some general comments and observations:
For pictures, even when I'm on my home wifi with an iPad or Android phone, pulling up pictures is very slow and not really usable. PicasaWeb is much faster. For videos I haven't figured out the right combination yet. I re-code my videos to "iPod" and web obtimized H.264 using Handbrake (PC). Still Pogoplug wants to re-optimize the video again. I have no encoding processing. But when I click to play a video on my Android phone, Pogoplug offers to optimize the video again. I never waited for it to finish optimizing, but at the rate it was going, it would take over 90 minutes. I thought video streaming was supposed to be in near real time, not a process of submiting a request and waiting for delivery at some future time. Others have reported video streaming well, so I've yet to hit the magic combination. When I send a link to myself to "share" video, I see the thumbnails in a browser page, but they won't play. Just a black screen. ??

Sharing files and folders looks like it would handy. But there is inconsistency in the link generated from the my.PogoPlug.com web page versus sending the link from the Android app. From the web page, there the option for the user to add a password and upload files. From the Android app, the invitation is for download only. Sometimes I see a file list of videos to download, other times I see thumbnails and a Play button. Very inconsistent.

Uploading using the Pogoplug browser (a very poor choice of name) [I mean the .exe program you install] won't upload at all. But uploading via a web browser works (e.g., Chrome).

Thanks.

Hi Tonyw,

This is Christopher, head of Customer Outreach here at Pogoplug.

Right now, pictures and videos are organized by timeline:
1. Pogoplug displays the modified date of the every file, including photos and videos. This is true for our mobile apps, and Pogoplug Uploader for Windows and OS X with a Pogoplug running at least firmware 3.2.x. If your Pogoplug with 4 USB ports is still running 2.5.x firmware, we're going to take care of updating these devices within the next 36-48 hours.
2. If you upload files using the Web UI, the time the file was copied to your Pogoplug is the date on Pogoplug.
3. If you want to manage your photos by directory structure you can do this by creating a folder on your Pogoplug drive via the Files tab and dragging files into your designated folder.

Regarding performance, we rely on Pogoplug daily so if we see widespread issues with performance we do try to address them. Regarding your encoded video getting re-encoded, if a Pogoplug process originally transcoded the video, then we shouldn't transcode the video again and we should log this as a bug. However, if you elect to encode your own video, we then presume you will disable transcoding in the Media Settings sub-menu at my.pogoplug.com.

We'll take a look at your sharing using my.pogoplug.com vs our mobile apps.

If you can't upload using Pogoplug Uploader/Browser, please contact Support. They can provide instruction to retrieve logs and may request a sample copy of your files that fail to upload. Sign In to my.pogoplug and 'Submit a support ticket' using 'Help Center'.

Kindest Regards,
Christopher Louie

Hi Christopher,
Thanks for the detailed response. Yes,my Pogoplug is currently running 2.5.9.5, I'm looking forward to the upgrade to 3.2.x.

Re: organizing photos and video, I have them organized by folders so browsing via the File tab works for me instead of using the Photos or Movies tab.

I have "optimize videos" set to Never in settings. So when I call for playback on a handheld device, I should select "play original" then? This works though kind of in a step frame manner and not smooth video. My wifi is G and my Internet is about 40+ Mbps down and about 2+ Mbps up. I'm assuming when at home, I'm streaming entirely via my home wifi and the stream doesn't need to go through Pogoplug servers?

thanks,
-Tony
