Signed up for the Pogoplug cloud and here's my impressions of it so far:
Likes:
- How it integrates directly into pogoplug.com, just like another one of your drives.
- How I can set up to backup my data from my drives to the cloud.
Dislikes:
- It is unbelievably slow.
- It's a bit buggy. I chose to backup from Photos to Photos and it ended up creating a Photos/Photos folder. I tried to stop the sync, but I could not. I tried to remove the backup, but that simply caused it to hang. (*)
Speaking of backing up, it's not working the same as copying. When I chose to copy Photos to Photos it did just that, copying the contents of Photos to the Photos folder I created. So backing up copies the contents of the folder to the specified folder, while copying copies the folder itself to the specified folder. It's subtle difference, which is a bit confusing.
Also backup is buggy in that if you remove the backup item while it's backing up it appears to break things. I did so and now it's either telling me the backup is up to date or if I disable and enable backup, it reports "Error".
Finally with no files on my drive it's now reporting I'm using 1.8 MB of space. Normally at this point I'd pull the drive and wipe the .cedb folder, but there doesn't appear to be a way of doing that with the cloud drive.
Edit:
Backing up my "Videos" folder to the cloud drive, I'm noticing that the files backed up to the cloud are not even close to the size of the originals.

Is this "cloud" in someone's basement. Haven't seen an upload this slow since the 1200 baud modem days... and that's being charitable.
I'm really intrigued by this new Pogoplug cloud move of Cloud Engines.
Can anyone explain me the advantages of the 5GB cloud storage for those already owning a Pogoplug enabled device?
I can imagine that for those not having one it is an interesting way of having 5gb of free cloud space and for Cloud Engines an opportunity to get a wider audience. It is like an intermediate step for those not ready to buy a device but wanting to get the full potential of the service.
I subscribed to the 5gb out of curiosity but this is for me just another drive in the list of devices I already own.

Im gonna use it essentially this way....
in my pogoplug i have a documents folder that i sync directly from my documents in my mac (i use a program named FolderWatch to sync it instantly, since i dont trust in the backup system from pogoplug.
this folder in the pogoplug drive. im going to have it mirrored exactly in the pogoplug cloud.
in this way, im always sure that if some day im out of home, and for some reasson my internet at home fails or smthing, and im not able to get into my documents folder, theres always gonna be a permanent cloud online with this important files.
at least, thats the use that im giving to it.
My backup to the Cloud went well. Nope, I did not install their browser. After signing on for the 5 GB, have the device and I am a premium user, I then reloaded Pogoplug drives. The Pogoplug Cloud icon appears on my desktop; Mac 10.6.8. Opened that icon then copied pasted the Documents folder, 3 GB. Did not take too long.
At present I do not feel comfortable with their browser software, thus I am not syncing I am doing a copy paste of files. The issue that scares me, maybe unfounded but it concerns me is software syncing, is when a file is delete from the local HDD that same file it is deleted off the Cloud as well; not a good thing. With the Pogoplug device when I remove a file off that device the file is not removed from the My Pogoplug site; a safety feature.

Wells here's more oddness. The backup process went to 50% and now it's back to 0% again. Despite the small file sizes (which is obviously wrong), it is reporting that I'm using 62 MB of storage now.
By the way, the video files that are supposed to be backed were already transcoded to smaller format. I'm not sure why they are so small after being backed up, especially the 131 KB file which was originally 24.9 MB.
At this point the "Backup" settings says the backup is 0% completed, but when I check the Media settings, it says the sync is finished (or at least it's not listed anymore).
It looks like the backup video files are corrupt as they won't play, which isn't surprising considering the file size.
