Ever since the latest android app update I can no longer stream video from my pogoplug, It use to pop up a box telling me that the video isn't optomized for mobile playback and there was an option to optomize it or play as is (this is what i use for playback with moboplayer) and the assorted formats played great, now there is no option that the video isn't optomized and it ask's for a player and will only play 10 sec preview is there a setting I have missed. I am using android app version 4.0.7.17 on a Xoom and Fasinate

Thanks

Kev

Hi brdfd1512 and Dramturg,

Could you issue be moboplayer related?

Thanks Chris tonight I will uninstall mobo and try again
I have a feeling that it might be the new computer software because I cannot stream to my computer from my.pogoplug.com it says it must optimize for web viewing and with the time that takes and the # of movies I have that is no good.

thank you

Hi Angelboy,

Unfortunately .mkv files are not supported.

Please take a look at this KB article 'Why can't I play my video or music file?' which describes codec an container support: http://support.pogoplug.com/entries/20704186-why-can-t-i-play-my-video-or-music-file

You could use Handbrake and encode the file as H.264.

Hi Angelboy

If you try Caligula's suggestion, please remember to set the 'Optimize your videos for playback:' to 'Never' in the Media Settings sub-menu or Pogoplug will try to transcode you video again.

thanks caligula & chris for follow up. i have plenty of files in mkv it will be lot of work to do conversion.

I have a Pogoplug V4, and a Samsung Epic 4G (running Froyo, and using 3G, not 4G). I have turned transcoding OFF on the Pogoplug, and am using Handbrake to transcode. (It takes the pogoplug too long to transcode movies, so I would prefer to use something like Handbrake or ffmpeg if possible).

The files that are generated are able to be streamed when using Wifi BUT when using 3G...
1) The Pogoplug app on my phone claims that the video is not optimized for the web, AND
2) The video is streamed in burst of a few seconds, followed by long delays (as if buffering on the phone), followed by a few more seconds of video

In Handbrake, I am using the iphone/ipod touch settings PLUS the web-optimized option.

So, some questions:
1) Has anyone successfully streamed a movie (something more than a few seconds) from a Pogoplug to an Android phone over 3G?
2) If so, how? What settings were used?
3) What specific video characteristics are needed for the Pogoplug to consider the video optimized for the web?

Thanks!

If your not getting the prompt anymore then you need to use the web interface to change the media settings for the drive back to the "on Demand" setting. This happend to me a few updates ago too.

The pogo transcodeing seems to work fine on the iPhone but not on the Droid has been my experience. (Hence best to use Moboplayer on the Driod and play the files "un-optimized")

I use AVS4U to convert my files to MPEG-4 for Android, as this software has this specific setting as an option. It can do multiple transcodes at once. I then transfer it to the Pogoplug device, and I use VPlayer on both my Android Smartphone and Tablet to view the files. I can stream movies and whatever else without problems. Each file does take about 7-8 seconds to load, but once it's loaded, there are no streaming issues.

OK, I am making progress. The problem seems to be that the bitrate of the encoding was too high. Reducing the transcoded file size (effectively reducing the bitrate) solved my problem. Of course, this reduces the video quality, but that's the tradeoff.

Since my phone has no trouble keeping up when the high bitrate is streamed on my LAN, the problem must be the 3G service.

That's good to hear things are starting to work out for you. A lower bitrate shouldn't be so bad if you're watching things on your phone, as it obviously has a smaller screen than an 60" HDTV, so the video quality doesn't need to be the best.

And make sure you click the boxes for "Large File Size" and "Web Optimized." Also, if you ever plan on showing those videos on a bigger screen, make sure to bump up that bitrate to something like 2500. Your files will be larger than you might want, but they won't be an eyesore when playing on a bigger screen.

I've used Handbrake to encode all my videos and they stream to my HTC Rezound and to my home entertainment system flawlessly.
