You wouldn't. There are several people who use a 3rd party backup program with their Pogoplug.
For people who don't have a backup program Active sync is an option that they may want to use instead of buying or installing a backup program.

I am very confused with the purpose of the Pogoplug Sync.
I have the Seagate Free Agent GoFlex Net and I use the PP software. I backup my video and pictures folder from my desktop to Seagate Drive using Memeo Instant Backup. Why would I need to use Active Copy/Sync if the files get updated on my Pogoplug every time I do a bakup ?

Got it...I did not realize until now that Active Sync allows me to sync my data on my desktop with my Seagate Hard drive. I just started the Active Copy now...hopefully in a couple of hours it will be in sync

I found this great article explaining Active Copy at the below link. This may be helpful to anyone who is totally confused on Active Copy. Until I read the article I did not realize I needed to have remote access on and that is why my local desktop never appeared before when trying to set up an active copy
