Ok - I think I figured it out.

The lack of thread creation was caused by a lack of memory - a swapfile has fixed that. SABnzbd working now (well i have got to the wizard)

I seem to have broke the pogoplug along the route though as my drives don't show up on the UI anymore.

But they are visible on the device and show up when I ssh in.
