I just recently got the Pogoplug (Black model) at BB and really like it so far. I do however have a few questions and concerns.

1. How Secure and Private can it be? When you use the Browser, you have to direct it to My.Pogoplug.com and log into it. To me this means you are not doing a direct connection between your viewing device (iPad, etc.) and your HDD's. You have to go thru Pogoplug to make that connection. Doesn't that mean they are able to also see your drives and what you are doing?

I know there is an App/Program also, but this also has to somehow connect to Pogoplug for connection.

2. What happends if Pogoplug goes out of business? Would you still be able to use the device and how?

3. When you connect an external drive (I have the WD 2TB Elements) can they still go into Sleep Mode? Not sure how the drives accomplish this... as whether the device (Pogoplug) it is connected to tells the drive to go to sleep or if it is built into the drive itself.

4. The one I bought at Best Buy yesterday doesn't say anywhere on the box that it is the Pogoplug PRO, but the device is Black like the PRO is. Have they made variation units?

1. It is secure in the fact that your files are stored at home. But with the service you agree to the terms and conditions. Others have complained. In the text somewhere they do say that they may view/store your files, blah blah. But I have had no issues with privacy in the year I have been using the device. There is a way to get a direct connect via the desktop app. It allows you to mount the drive to your computer and it is seen like a drive that is physically connected.

2. The great thing is that if popgoplug goes out of business you will still have all your files at home rather than in the cloud. You might be able to still use the device just without updates to the software and possibly the website shutting down. This will most likely not happen seeing they continue to improve upon there already great product.

3. Not sure about sleep mode, but I assume when your not using them they would sleep and reactivate upon using the drive again.

4. They do have many versions of pogoplug. They have a black device that is called pogoplug biz, but also costs about $300. Most likely if the deice is new and not pink or grey it might be the pro. The only difference is wi-fi, so check to see if that function is included, if it is, you have the pro.

Is there any way to connect directly without the use of a computer? Does the Pogoplug output an IP address that you can use for direct connection? Or maybe you could SSH into it somehow?

Yes there are ways to connect directly, but it requires some now how. Openpogo and others are options.

The black on is likely a P21, which is the black version of the standard units they make now (B0x) and has a PLX oxnas chip in it.

So is this model a better version of the original pink one?

Also, on the PRO version, is the only real benefit that you don't have to connect it directly to the router. It can be done wirelessly? But then aren't you limited to upload/download speeds of WiFi? Wired connection would be much more faster than over WiFi... Correct?

Correct, if you want performance then you do not want to use wi-fi. It slows down the speed so much that pogoplug is not including it in its new shipment of their pogoplug mobile.
