Hi folks,

I'm pretty new to Pogoplug and all the matters coming with it.. The one question I'd like to ask is about the wireless function of the Pogoplug Pro:

Has the pogoplug a built-in antenna for wireless an if yes, can I switch it off?

The reason I'm asking is because I don't want wireless in my home (the electronic smog issue- I'm not the one who brought this up in my home ;-) ). My Router doesn't have wi-fi and it is switched off on my laptop. Therefore I was wondering if the wireless function of the Pogo Pro means that the device is using the antenna of the router or has 'it's own' wi-fi antenna.

If the latter is the case: Can I switch the wireless off?

Hope this is understandable... Help wuch be much apprechiated!

Thanks!

the pogoplug pro has it;s own wireless adapter built in so the answer to your question is that YES, it is using it;s own antennna.

as far as I know, even if you don;t use it, it just broadcasts looking for available routers to connect to.

there is no physical way to turn the built in wireless adapter off. there may be a way to do it in software from the SSH commandline. does anyone know?

Without mucking about in firmware.. no. I can look into that though, probably just a commenting of the device driver/load from a script.

is there a way to issue something like an something along the lines of an ifdown wlan0? i suppose that would depend on whether that package was actually installed on the unit....

i suppose the quickest way to nirvana for this person would be to return the unit for a non wifi version if it;s that big a deal....

You could do that, but you'd have to ssh in every power cycle to do it again. I believe that the default firmware has wlan0 names ra0.

ifdown ra0

for this guy, that might be the lesser of 2 evils. besides, the pogoplug tends to not get power cycled often-just kind of sits there. if he wanted to make it permanent, maybe there is a config file that could be edited with a line commented out as you suggested.

hmmm....i wonder if this could have helped the guy from a few weeks ago who could not seem to get his wireless working at all-to issue an ifup command.

i wonder how hard would it be for Pogoplug to code the ability on the my.pogoplug.com website to control this feature.

not that I am holding my breath waiting for it, but seems like it would be a good control to have to be able to "wink" the wifi controller.

Unless of course, the user is using Wifi to connect to my.pogoplug.com, and which point.. WhOOPS!

Thanks a lot for your help so far guys!

Too bad there is no way to turn the wifi off without hassle or deeper programming skills which I for sure lack...

I just contacted the Pogoplug support wheter this feature to turn off wifi is planned for future software versions.

Personally I don't mind wifi but other people in my house (kind of a dorm) do.. So it's not allowed around here.

Getting another Pogoplug version would mean waiting for the new mobile as there are no other versions without wifi available, right?

Sure there are: all of the other pogoplug models don't have wifi, so any of them would suit your needs.

Thanks..
But I can only find the Pro and business models on the pogoplug homepage..

Haven't found a store back home here in Germany that carries the Pogos.. Therefore I was a little confused.

Ah, ok. Then in that case I'll look into it later today if I can find time.
