1. Correct
2. Enabling remote access on your mac does not affect access to the drives attached to the pogoplug drive. The software will mount the drives on the pogoplug as hard drives on your mac.
You can register it, but then just turn off remote access.
3. User base level sharing can only be done with the Business edition of the pogoplug only (I believe) and that is only through the web interface.
Hello there,
so today I got my Pogoplug Pro, hooked it up and registered it. So far, so good.
I still have several questions though:
1. It seems to me that in order to access your files, you have to have an active Internet conncetion, even if you are on the same LAN as the Pogo? Ist that really true?
2. In order to see the shared drive on the finder, I need to have the Pogo software on my mac. But do I really need to register my macbook there? I mean, I don't want to share anything from my macbook. But if I hit "unregister" I couldn't access my files on the Pogo.
3. Is it possible to share files locally on a user based level? Or do I have to invite every one via an e mail adress, even if they are on the same local network?
For now, I think these are all my qustions but I am sure there will be more to come :)
The necessity to be online and artificial castration of functions (such as user based sharing, webdav, ftp, smb, whatever access) is huge bummer imho. It is kind of ridiculous to be honest.
It seems there are only two ways now: Send it back or get my hands dirty and install archlinux.
If you have the know how then get your hands dirty. Make sure you install archlinux on an external drive so that you may revert back to the pogoplug firmware easily by unplugging the drive. Good luck!

The Biz allows you to create other root/admin users, but not locally. Nothing will work unless it's connected to the internet.
Are there other/better alternatives for the Pogoplug Pro than archlinux?
