I am wondering has anyone ever thought of using multiple pogoplugs to create on big storage network. Yes there are companiesdoing this, but it would be interesting to see if a community of users could pool their resources together pogoplugs+drives+bandwidth.. to create such a network. I have a few Idea on the subject and how to tackle the project.

Anyone else think like me?

I am not sure what you are talking about. Mirroring other Pogoplug drives, selling cloud storage?
Can you clarify a bit?

Brandon,

So the idea is this. Pogo plug users get together link their pogo plugs together using a predefined setup (Depending on their role in the network) whether a node or administrator. Once these Pogopplugs are linked outside users could take advantage of the total drive power of the "Linked Pogo plugs" and use the resources of the "Cloud." Obviously several PogoPlug Biz would come into play so to determine drive allocation etc in. What I propose would be a Fee based service. But initially I am more interested in pushing the boundaries of the device and using it in real world applications. They tote themselves has a "Personal Cloud" so multiple pogoplugs in multiple locations with multiple drives would make it just that.

I can see how that could logistically work. I just don't see a demand or market for it. Not to mention the upload speeds one may need to serve files and a privacy issue people may be concerned with.

Having a Pogoplug for offsite backup is a good idea. That way if anything happened in your home, like a fire, everything could be backed up elsewhere. I have thought about putting a Pogoplug in another family members home to do something like that but I don't know if anyone would trust a 3rd party to host their files.

Brandon, a company called Symform.com is doing this distributed cloud network etc. I do see a huge problem with Upload speed issues. Privacy issues could easily be addressed.

People already trust third parties to their backups box.net, mozy.com,carbonite etc etc.

The pogoplug alone is not the end all solution but with some tweaks it could be a good solution for distributed network storage.

I am currently working with some friends on field testing this. I just thought I throw the idea out there.
