Checkbox to enable SSH to the box on my.pogoplug.com account is checked...
Pogoplug has had drives 'ejected', been unplugged and then all reconnected after ticking above box....

LAN subnet is 10.0.0.X (PC I'm using to connect from is actually 10.0.0.50)
PC is Windows XP - software I'm trying to use is Putty
Pogoplug was allocated a fixed address of 10.67.101.1 by the Pogo software installation on the PC (before installing the software the adapter properties showed that address would be allocated by DHCP...) with a netmask of 255.255.255.0. No gateway entry or DNS server entries are showing.

Pinging 10.67.101.1 works OK ....

From Putty I'm entering the address 10.67.101.1 and the SSH box is ticked.
Preferred SSH protocol 2

Result...
The Putty window opens and few seconds later an alert box entitled "PuTTy Fatal Error" containing the text "Network error: Connection refused" appears... nothing appears in the Putty window itself (apart from cursor in top left corner).

Also tried allocating an address of 10.0.0.177 to match LAN manually but no difference discerned in any way.

Bit of a duffer in this area so any suggestions, please?
All my LAN connections are on static IP addresses... DHCP switched off on the router, I think, would that have any bearing?

Any help greatly appreciated...

Steve

The Pogoplug only picks up IP's via DHCP. It does assign a 169.x.x.x address, try 169.254.37.133

I'm a little confused because the two IP addresses and subnet you talked about above don't really match up.

Anyway, you should either use a DHCP server, or use ifconfig to set a second, VLAN IP address, like
ifconfig eth0:3 10.0.0.111 netmask 255.255.255.0

Lee, thanks for the reply... but not sure about the message...

"The Pogoplug only picks up IP's via DHCP. It does assign a 169.x.x.x address, try 169.254.37.133"

Surely its the router that assign's the IPs?
My LAN is on a 10.0.0.x subnet... suppose I could try to open a range of IPs in that range for DHCP allocation?

"Anyway, you should either use a DHCP server, or use ifconfig to set a second, VLAN IP address, like ifconfig eth0:3 10.0.0.111 netmask 255.255.255.0"

Assuming that command is Linux???
I'm on Windows XP....
And, anyway I did similar as per my original posting in manually setting an IP of 10.0.0.177, netmask 255.255.255.0? Made not a bit of difference....

Any more suggestions, please?
Anyone?

Right, a router with DHCP turned on would assign IP addresses. But I thought you said you were using all static IP's. ANyway...

Ah, I just realized something... your 10.67.101.1 IP is from the Pogoplug XCE adapter. This is for the VPN (for lack of a better word) back to Pogoplug's services. You might as well ignore that.

So, let's assume you can see drives from http://my.pogoplug.com. If so, just scan your subnet for the Pogoplug.

I wrote an article on finding your device, here
http://www.pogoplugged.com/article/21558/Locating-Your-Pogoplug-on-Your-Network/

or here
http://www.leeandcathy.com/2011/09/locating-new-device-on-your-network.html

Once you locate it, try to SSH (with PuTTY) to your 10.0.0.x address.

Aaaahhh!
Sounding good, Lee! :)
Won't be able to play around for a couple of days now though as various other things will be eating into my time.

I can see the two attached USB drives via my.pogoplug.com so that's working ok... and that 10.67.101.1 address was from doing an ipconfig on THE PC .. so obviously it's the PC software's IP! DOH!!!! And it would have been that that I was changing when I did the trial of 10.0.0.177 as said in the original posting! DOH again!

As soon as I get chance though I'll have a play and let you know what happens... but feel its all going to work out just fine!

Many thanks

Had a few minutes just to have a quick look at router, etc.

Did actually already have a band of available DHCP addresses to hand out and has assigned the Pogo an address of 10.0.0.48.

Unfortunately no time to look further into this as have to go out again shortly... but at least looking OK so far... :)

One thing though that I was reminded of when looking at router settings... I have Port Forwarding for ports 22, 23 and 80 going to my current server at 10.0.0.33... do I need to reset any of those? Possibly 22?

Many thanks again for your help, Lee.

You don't need to forward any ports to the Pogoplug, unless you are trying to connect from off-site. ANd then, you'd only want to forward port 22 (SSH).

All sorted for now... many many thanks
