A How To Question: Can I setup a permanent link for sharing files with family and friends in other locations (cities and states). I've shared via email with temporary (2 week) link and that was great, but I'd like to set up a folder to put photos etc in and have a link that isn't temporary that my family and friends can regulary check to see what's new. None of them have a Pogoplug device.

Yes, they can sign up for a user name and password and that will extend the 2 weeks period to unlimited (or until you delete the share). You could also resend the refresh the link, or if you update the file or folder the link should automatically refresh.

Thanks Rock... I didn't know you could 'sign up' for a user name and password without purchasing a Pogoplug. Where do they 'sigh up' for a user name and password? ...the web page the temporary link takes them to... www.pogoplug.com home page... where do they go to 'sign up'?

Am I right in thinking from the original question that links via an e-mail invite are only valid for 2 weeks????? Unless you follow the suggested 'refresh routines? Or everybody applies for accounts?

If that's correct, then that sucks!
Negates the whole reason for me getting the PP in the first place...
Refreshing possibly hundreds of folders for hundreds of people over a period of time... :eeekkk!!:

Will just have to continue to bear the electricity bill for the server that this was meant to replace...

When you send them a link and the open it, it takes them to the pogoplug page. If I am correct on the left hand side it says something like "This link will expire in 2 weeks, for continued access sign up for an account" They can click on that it it should take them to the pogoplug website where then can sign up. They might have to download the desktop software but I am not sure about that. What it basically does, is allows them to log into there own account via the pogoplug website. Once there they can click in the tab that says "files shared with me" That is where the files that you are sharing go.

"Once there they can click in the tab that says "files shared with me" That is where the files that you are sharing go."

But why do they 'go' anywhere??
They're on my drives attached to the PP.. just need to access them there...

Liking this thing less and less... :(

They dont actually move anywhere, even when you share files. Unless they choose to download the file to their computer. Essentially with an account they will see the same thing you see via the web browser.

September 16, 2011 4:28 AM

So why the need to register a PP account after 2 weeks?
The files are on *MY* PP and should freely available...

Just can't see the point of that at all...

Arch Linux here I come - when I find someone who knows Linux stuff and can set it up for me... :)

That is how it works. It is actually pretty simple and more convenient than you are making it out to be.

Rock... Thanks, that makes sense to me. If anyone can sign up using there email address as their ID, whether they have a Pogoplug or not, then the Pogoplug community/network is managed via the email ID. A temporary link is created when a Pogoplug member sends an email to someone who is not a member. AND that someone can if they choose sign up to be a member which gives them permanent access to files that members share with them.

Ummmm... rather do without the middleman.....

Misunderstood how this thing worked... thought it was just like a personal server but with less electric needed...

...less electric AND... no need for the costs and hassles of things like static IP adress, FTP account and/or your own website. The middleman makes those things unnecessary and provides security for accessing your files. As they say your own personal 'Cloud'.

Set up static IP - zero cost and 30 seconds of effort with DynDNS...
An FTP is server easy enough to set up and run...
Web site - why?
File security - trivial...

Share all my files via SME Server already on a PC based server....
does all I want and more...... and I just wanted to save electricity costs.
Pure 100% reason for the PP purchase.
Description in adverts/blurb makes it sound like a low power SME Server... but is actually a million miles away from that.

Advert info on the PogoPlug says 'share your files with everybody' but does not say that 'everybody' is FORCED to install what should be unneeded software on their own PCs... the reality of this blob is SO unlike the offered dream...

Anyway very disappointed with it as it stands... as I say need to wait for my mate to come back from hols and utter some magic Linux commands at it... :) As soon as I can get SSH access to it, which it currently appears not to want to do...

Thanks DS... I didn't know about a 'FREE' service like DynDNS has to solve the problem of the dynamic IP from my ISP. I'll have to look into that. Will there be any problems getting requests to pass thru my dsl modem and wireless router using DynDNS?

September 18, 2011 2:49 AM

BuffaloKC,

Sorry for delay but was out yesterday...

I've been using DynDNS for several years now without problem both on my previous ADSL provider or my current one.

In fact on both my two latest routers (ADSL and the current cable one) they had/have built in DynDNS capability... just a matter of going to 'www.dyndns.com' and setting up an account and DNS name to start with, and then entering the details into the router as required and then you can just forget it.

If your router does not directly support DynDNS then you download and run a small prog fom DynDNS's site which runs in the background and monitors your WAN IP and if it changes then it sends the updated info to the DynDNS servers and keeps you up to date.

Never had any problems with this at all - both with router with built in capability AND using the background prog.

Best check your router's manual - most likely it has DynDNS access built in.

There are other similar free Dynamic DNS providers - No-IP (http://www.no-ip.com/services/managed_dns/free_dynamic_dns.html) or yi.org (http://www.yi.org/) being two... but generally DynDNS seems the most popular and I've never had a problem with it...

September 18, 2011 11:04 AM

DS,
Thanks again... I've got a relatively old router so I was surprised to find a specific 'How To' for setting it up with DynDNS on the internet. Looks like it should be a piece of cake.

By the way being a recent newbie myself with the Pogoplug device I've been doing a lot of reading/research... regarding your concern about sharing files with everybody when you wrote...'everybody' is FORCED to install what should be unneeded software on their own PCs... I'm not positive but I think that all anyone has to do is sign up for a user name and password to make the link you email them not expire in 2 weeks. After that they just sign in to the Pogoplug website and have access to the files that are 'shared' with them, by you or anyone else.

September 18, 2011 11:30 AM

Aaahhhh! Probably right about the PogoPlug share thing... I was understanding that they would need to install the PogoPlug (Win/Linux/Android) software but thinking about it probably not... Will have to re-think about it'd all work in my situation as I have lots of people who can write to many folders (although different people access different but sometimes same folders), even more who can access read only folders... and all very dynamic and constantly changing...

September 18, 2011 11:34 AM

There are no read only folders. It is either view/download, or full access.

September 18, 2011 12:30 PM

Oh!
Meets my requirements less and less... or should I really say, not at all :(
Looks like hacking to make a full blown stand-alone server......

September 18, 2011 12:53 PM

I made a post on this subject before. Here is the link, you can see the response that cloud engine gave me.

http://www.pogoplugged.com/forum/thread/16513/View-only-Download-Limited-acce...

Other threads indicate that Pogoplug is working on new features and a view only option is in the works.

September 18, 2011 1:09 PM

Cheers, Rock.
Sounds like your needs match mine pretty much...
... but if those were addressed there'd still be the issue of 'numbers' due to potentially unlimited 'accessers'. I have a server with various access levels open to members of several clubs and forums I'm a member of (plus friends/family/colleagues/etc) ... in fact I don't know most of the people who access and they are given free rein to pass on connection details to others for several folders, etc, etc.
