I want to upgrade my home network from 10/100 to gigabit. I can find good switches. The problem is finding a router that is well rated. I need at least 8 ports. Everything I find has negative ratings.

Like I said, I am a home user. I can't spend a ton of money. But I can spend enough to get quality, a couple of hundred. Features aren't as important as speed. I am not streaming media. I use my attached Pogoplug mostly fo rbackup. One drive per PC.

Can anyone make reccomendations?

until prices get better or routers get better my recomendation-just buy a inexpensive gig switch and connect it 100 mb to your existing router.

even at 100 mb, most likely your internet speed will still be your bottleneck unless you have greater than 12 mb download speeds. gig speeds mean alot more for local file transfers and as long as all your local devices are wired and gig connected, you should get the best speeds within your network.

Well, I guess that's the biggest problem. With this pogoplug, doesn't everything go up to the servers and back anwyay?

No that is a common misconception. If you and your Pogoplug are on the same LAN you do not go through the servers.  Your transfer stays on your LAN.

It does require an interent connection to log in, view files, etc, but the transfer does not go through the Internet.

Thanks guys. I'll just get myself a decent switch then. My internet speeds are fine.

Mucho thank you!
