So, dumb question of the day: how does PogoPlug Mobile differ from the PogoPlug device I own now?!

The only differences I can see:

PogoPlug Mobile has a different physical design (actually alot nicer looking asthetically than my current PogoPlug device).

PogoPlug Mobile can read SD cards my PogoPlug device cannot.

PogoPlug Mobile allows for backups to occur for the mobile devices.

But from that point on I am confused at the differences betwen these devices. My current PogoPlug device allows me to stream music and video via WiFi or 3G to my iPhone/iPad. I can view picture files as well.

Due to limitations of the iDevices, I can't open certain files when browsing around my hard drive(s) via PogoPlug.

So, is there a huge difference? Is it strictly streaming only to mobile devices?

I admit the only complaint (because I am anal) I have currently is my Album Art doesn't come up in my existing PogoPlug.

I am just wondering what the difference here is for people who own a PogoPlug device and already paid a onetime fee for streaming capabilities.  Is there an update coming for the existing devices to allow the new PogoPlug mobile features?

ok, I think that's enough of an endless stream of thought for now....

thank you.

I see this, and the form factor involved, as the replacement to the failed Video unit. This is also likely, and I say likely, to be based on different and hopefully more robust hardware.

ArchLinuxARM will let you know what we find when we get out hands on it.

Please someone from Pogoplug post a clarification.

For some it seems as if Pogoplug is still trying to perfect "the same" product. Launching "the same" product as it they were different, with different names makes things confusing.

Pogoplug please clarify.

I agree with JJ and the article that was posted. Even though I'm new to the Pogoplug community and just purchasing a Pogo, it won't make me happy if they don't include all software based features on the new Mobile model to current owners. Obviously the hardware features couldn't be passed on but from what I see it's just the ability to read SD cards, not a big draw in my books.

I agree with JJs article as well. Kvaillant, I started to write the same thing, that it would be nice to be able to upgrade current user's with some of the new features. I am sensing that is not the case here.

Still, the PogoPlug Device is a good option and not too painful on the wallet. Other devices similar to PogoPlug that I looked into provided features I didn't need such as being able to connect to Netflix, YouTube, etc..

I'd like the functionality to upload my photos from mobile device to Pogoplug like Google plus does. Seem like it should be doable on the client software I would be amazed if it did not get that functionality.

Hi all,

This is Christopher, head of Customer Outreach.

Pogoplug Mobile is a direct result of listening to our customers who are always on the go, use SD cards from their mobile devices and cameras, and don't need as many of the storage expansion ports as Mobile's big brother, Pogoplug. We're really excited by the result: smaller form factor, the inclusion of an SD card slot, and a single USB port for storage expansion. All of the device, PC software and mobile apps have also been updated, including automatic import of media, enhanced video transcoding and streaming, and simpler sharing.

Having said this, let me reassure all of you who own Pogoplugs right now. After Pogoplug Mobile's release, your software and firmware will be upgraded for free to include Pogoplug Mobile's new features. We don't have a confirmed schedule for this update at this time.

Thank you for your enthusiasm for Pogoplug.

Best Regards,
Christopher

Now THAT'S what I like to hear! Our software and firmware will be upgraded to include the new features. I feel alot better now, cannot wait for the upgrade.

Thanks for the update, Christopher.

good article. well written.

What;s funny is that you can already mount an SD card reader on an existing pogoplug. So unless the hardware processing power is vastly improved(it;s biggest shortcoming), I don;t see the benefit of this new product....

what's next? a unit with the already existing SATA port exposed and converted to eSATA?

September 6, 2011 4:22 PM

Thanks Christopher for elaborating on the differences between the units and letting us know that we will be getting an updated firmware in the future. It's put me at ease knowing I didn't just purchase a product that wasn't going to be continually developed. Thank You.

But the hardware itself has something new? (better) i mean, more ram, or faster processor?
the video transcoding continues as the old one, or now is going to be "instant" like the Pogoplug Video.

September 9, 2011 4:35 PM

Christopher note on the 6th is encouraging but please post on the website or email your file updates and download schedual to your customers as to what the changes or benefits are.

I have the PRO version myself and was impressed by what it could do initially, but, the last update to pogoplug on my mobile android phone took away the abiliy to send pictures to my pogoplug pro at home. That was disappointing.

September 10, 2011 10:07 AM

I saw the "mobile" and thought of this: I like that my laptop shows up as a pogoplug device. Wouldn't it be cool if my android devices and iPad showed up as well? I'd be in heaven...

No need for this comment/suggestion either.

Clearly what's meant is that an SD card port (slot) is provided on the new device so you don't have to have a separate card reader to plug an SD card into, thus a more compact (read "mobile") means of storage.

To me, the most encouraging thing here is that CEi has not abandoned PP hardware in favor of the Pogoplug Software product. The software only product is not a good fit for me and I'm glad to see that they are continuing with new hardware development.

I don't think CE would be in existence without the hardware...many people would rather use the hardware than the software version.

I really agree with that JJ! It just that in the past few months it seemed that they were solely concentrating on the software only product and (to my knowledge) still haven't released an unbundled version of the old PDrive utility. Seeing this new hardware is an encouraging sign!

Honestly, I'm still not sure what model I should be buying. I am ready to pull the trigger on one. My sole purpose is to browse the hard drive from my old iMac on my iPad (I sold the computer, so all I have is the hard drive) and be able to see pics, videos, etc.

From what I can see, the current model will do this. I can buy it on Amazon for $65 or so. The Mobile is $80, has an SD slot, but less USB ports.

Is there something compelling about the new Mobile itself that makes it "better" for my usage, or should I just get the current model? (SD Slot & USB port count doesn't really matter to me, but if its faster, more robust hardware than I'd rather wait and get the Mobile).

September 13, 2011 2:24 PM

@DJFriar Your best bet is probably the Pro ($50 at Best Buy right now) and an external case for your old HD (which can also be bought at Best Buy). I can't say for sure whether the Mobile has a better processor the Pro, but I doubt it. Can anyone from CE chime in?

September 18, 2011 10:44 PM

Question for CE: Will the Pogoplug mobile transcode videos on the fly like the Pogoplug Video attempted to do, or will video need to be transcoded by the users like on the first few Pogoplug models?

"We're really excited by the result: smaller form factor, the inclusion of an SD card slot, and a single USB port for storage expansion"

Just for giggles I tryed a USB Flash Drive in my Pogo. It works. Then I tryed a SD Chip plugged into my card reader and plugged the card reader in to my Pogo. It works. If you want/need to use either you have no problem.
