1. A pogoplug device allows you to share an external usb 2.0 hard drive or flash drive. It has four ports a believe and each one has support for hard drives up to 2 Terabytes (not sure on max drive size)
2.Premium software also you to stream video and music from your computer. Keep in mind your computer must be left on and running at all times when trying to access files. Free software version allows for file sharing but not media streaming. A pogoplug device will do the same as the premium software but is a dedicated device and will be running at all times unless you unplug it. It is more convient, but also costs a little more. It has the same features at the premium software.
3. Answered in question 2.
4. When on the road you can access your files from your computer (software) or files from the pogoplug (hardware) via any web browser by loging in to mypogoplug.com. From there you can view, upload, delete, share, stream, and a bunch of other really cool features.
In regards to your situation I would recommend hte pogoplug device. This given that you must leave need an internet connection active at all times. You external drive must be connected to the pogoplug in order to access your files. This is the best idea because you want access to your files all the time. Also if you want to keep files off your computer this is the only option. The premium software is used basically to stream your computer files to another location, (cell phone, tablet, and so on.) If you do not want the files to load up on your computer you need the pogoplug device. You can even stream your music through a third part application like iTunes without having to have them on your computer. This comes in handy for me when I take my netbook with me that has limited hard drive space.
Any more questions?

So, I'm confused about how PP works. I have read about what it does, which is exactly what I'm looking for. But I have a few questions that I'm not finding clear answers to.
1. If you are using a PP device, are your files actually stored on the device, or one your computer? And if they are stored on the device, does this mean that the device comes in certain sizes? For example, like my external hd is 500gb.
2. What are the major differences between using Premium Software and actually purchasing a device?
3. I think I read somewhere that if you're using the software, you have to leave your main computer powered on all the time. Is this true? And if you have the device, do you still have to?
4. Using either the PP device, or premium software, am I able to take a file that I've accessed using PP and save/download it to my computer? Or am I only allowed to view it?
Basically, my girlfriend and I live together currently and share lots of files and media on an external hard drive. I will be moving away next month for school, and we need to find some way to be able to both have access to our files, including the music. We'd like to be able to keep the files/media on a seperate device (whether it be our external hard drive, or something else.. anything rather than one of our laptops) so that our own computers aren't bogged down with the massive amount of music we share.
So, we need something that we can use to make our external hard drive accesible to both of us, while being able to stream the music from it. Would you recommend the premium software, or the actual device? Or both? And why?
Sorry for the long-winded, somewhat confusing question!! Just trying to figure this all out. Thanks for your time! :)
Mild addition to #1: You can use a usb hub to increase the total number of ports, and some of the newer >2TB drives are supported by the new model pogoplugs (Classic [B0x], Pro [Px1])
Thank you SO much for answering all of those questions.
So let me see if I understand this correctly: With the premium software, the files would all be stored on my computer, which would have to be on all the time in order to access my files from another computer/tablet/smart phone. However, if I bought the PP device, I would keep the device plugged into my wireless router, and my hard drive would be plugged into the PP device. So the router, PP device, and hard drive would be powered on at all times, but my actual computer wouldn't have to be on in order to access my files on my external hard drive? And I could access everything on my hard drive through the internet connection and wouldn't have to keep the PP device plugged into my computer? Is that correct?
Everything you just said sounds correct to me. An idea solution for two people wanted to share files from different locations at the same time. Just saw an add on cnet.com. They are selling a pogoplug video for 29.99. for the next day or two. Jump on it fast. cost the same as the software.

I would not buy a Video. They have all been recalled.
That is however, not a Video but a Pro (and therefor is fine)

The video was a special unit that was discontinued, don't worry about it :p
Okay.. so when I was at best buy asking about the pogo plug, they said I had to buy the device (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Cloud+Engines+-+Pogoplug+Multimedia+Connector/232...
but if I wanted to use it for streaming music, I had to buy this separate license or something (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Cloud+Engines+-+Pogoplug+Software/2329449.p?id=12...
Do I need both? What is that second thing for?
Yeah.. that's what I was thinking.. which is what landed me here asking y'all questions instead of them :) Thank you sooo much, you have been SO helpful. I will be purchasing one in the next week, so if I have problems with installing it and such, I may be back with more questions! :)
Thanks again!
Wait, one more question. On that link, it says you need the Premium Software to use it on more than one computer. What are the benefits of having that software? They have it on sale for 10 bucks instead of 30, do I need it?
Also.. if the pogoplug device is set up at my girlfriends house, and I'm away at school, am I able to send her files through the device? Or would I have to be at her house to put them on my external? (Is that making sense)
I'm sorry to be that annoying person with a million questions, I just don't fully understand computer stuff! :/
You will be able to upload to the drive anywhere with an internet connect. Remember tho that your upload speeds will be slowed when not on the same network as the pogoplug device. Still manageable depending on how often and how big of files you want to add. If you have the device you really dont need the premium software, unless you have things on your computer that are not backup to your external hard drive that you want to share.
Is it possible for me to share the contents in my Pogoplug with other family members and how do I go about doing it? Must they also create and log in with their individual email account and password?
No that is the greatest feature of the pogoplug. Log into your account via the web interface and choose a file of folder. Click the "Share" button and you can choose who you want to share it with. You just enter that person's email address and pogoplug automatically sends them a link to your files. It does not actually send them the files but they can choose to download them if they like. They do not need to create their own user and password. Another great feature is that if you share a folder with someone then later make changes to it, the system automatically sends them another email notifying them that it has been updated.
IC...Thanks, but what if I want this person or persons to permanently have excess to all my files in my USB device which is connected to the Pogoplug?
Haven't tried it, but Im pretty sure you could share your whole drive and then the other user could make a user name and password to continue to access those files until you decide to stop the share.
