Hi,

I have come across similar posts but no exact answer regarding the upload speeds or a clear explanation on how to do the best setup to achieve high speed.

Some talk about registering unregistering..others talk about that the uploading goes through the internet and not through the LAN..

I bought the pogoplug with the hope to use it as a backup server for personal photos, films etc but with the uploading speed that I have today its USELESS! I get around 2,4mb max.. when connected from my laptop wireless to my router which the pogoplug is plugged in..

I would just be happy if I got around 25mb which some people have written here... and still have high hopes for my pogoplug SO anybody out there with answers ???

cheers and thanks in advance.

Your speed its primarily a result of your internet and not the pogoplug. Different ways to speed up transfer. (fastest) plug your hard drive straight into your laptop. This is not the most convenient but if you have a large amount of files to transfer it is the quickest. (Fast) hard wire you laptop straight to the router. Using an Ethernet cable will greatly speed up your transfers. Using a wireless connection will be the slowest. I have never reached speeds as fast as 25 mb/s. However while on wi-fi I average 1 to 2 mb/s and when using an Ethernet cable i average between 10 mb/s and 12 mb/s. These speeds are given using a 4 year old hp laptop. Im sure a newer laptop will transfer faster.

the fastest you will ever get with wifi connection is 5.4-7.8 megabyte per second due to limits on wifi. even wired at 100mb, max you will get will be around 8-12 mb per sec.

if you have alot of stuff, defintitely transfer them wired via gig to your network if you can.

fastest speeds are reported assuming a local gig connection to your pogo plug with a fast 7200 rpm drive.

well if I am going to connect through cable with every update than it loses the whole point of trying to have a NAS kind of solution with pogoplug.

I am sure I am not alone today with having large picture files from digital camera which I want to transfer on to pogoplug for easy access through the web.Than there is also small video recordings also...this means that whenever I want to empty my digital camera I need to connect through cable or have to connect the harddisk. hmmm not at all what I was hoping for... as said whats the use of having pogoplug if I cannot have such a setup.

All I wanted was to have my pictures and small videos on pogoplug for internet sharing...do I need to search for some other solution or device? HELP!!!

@Jakubman
I concur with the other comments. The main obstacle is the upload speed your internet provider offers. The second one is the wireless router. For photos I normally shoot RAW. These are pretty big files and for me it is not such a hassle to unplug my PP attached drive hook it up to my computer, transfer the files quickly and then hook it up again to the Pogoplug. I have a Netgear NAS in addition to my Pogoplug and the speed if you do something wireless is not any better than with PP.
Why don't you download the (free) PP software. Then you can drag and drop files in Windows explorer (I assume you run Windows).
Also, if you take out the card from your camera and plug it into your laptop the speed is probably faster than uploading the files from your camera to the PP.

Assuming you are transferring via you LAN then internet speed will not come into account.
Also check and make sure that 'Use full security settings' is turned off at my.pogoplug > Settings > Security. That will affect your LAN speeds.

Since I like to not only have a back up, but the ability to share my pics I use the Pogoplug software and active copy to put my pics on my Pogoplug.

All I have to do is copy my pics to my computer and the pogoplug SW takes care of putting them on my Poplug in the beckground so it doesn't really matter how long it takes.

@Jakubman

where are you uploading the pictures and videos from? directly from camera, attached wirelessly or wired from laptop or computer local attached or from a remote network?  is your network cards and switch gig?  some aspects are in your control and some are not.  whenever you are internet connected, upload/download speed is determined by the provider and to get more bandwidth costs.

even directly from camera to pc via a USB cable, the bottleneck is the USB 2.0 interface and speed of your memory card and the reader built into the camera.  the readers built into cameras are typically slow.  better speeds are usually achieved by taking the card out of the camera, loading it into an external card reader and then copying the files using windows explorer.  i know it;s an extra step but it could speed things up tremendously.  you can even directly plug the card reader into the Pogoplug and move the files using the web interface or client software.

the Pogoplug is not a NAS.  It;s a media sharing/streaming device that is adequate at accessing 1 file at a time.  doesn;t really handle multi user simultaneous requests well either.  It;s components are not high power or high speed.  However, it does have a gig wired NIC.  USB 2.0 ports and fast SATA 7200 RPM drives will give you adequate performance but hardly stellar.  Anything less and you will get less results.....the max speed i;ve reported of 25-28 meg per second is either the gig interface or USB 2.0 bottleneck.

here is a good one-

tried to upload about 6 gigs worth of MP3 files remotely through internet to my Pogoplug via the 2.5 client to USB flash disk attached and dragging and dropping from Windows Explorer. got about 1/10th(800 mb) of the way through. files were about 2-4 meg each. according to task manager, was uploading at roughly 130k-600k per second which is slow but probably appropriate for the file size I guess and my upload rate is probably about that speed too. tried to add more traffic to the equation but WAN traaffic never got above 130k. the upload never really stalled but i noticed other computers and devices dropping off my pogoplug network, not able to connect via wifi or not being able to get a new dhcp address. could still ping router and get to internet on another machine.

my prognosis, i inadvertently flooded my inbound router with inbound traffic causing a Denial of Service condition. only way to fix was to reboot the inbound router that my Pogoplug was on. moral of the story-this stuff happens.....another case of a consumer level piece of equipment failing because I was trying to do more than it could handle. there are alot of components and variables to doing a simple transfer over the internet. if something you are doing isn;t working, don;t get discouraged. getting everything to work the way you expect it to might take a little trial and error.

the USB flash disk was probably another weak link. retrying to my 7200 rpm SATA drive and seems to be working. using a program called ALLSYNC to syncronize folder and drive letters this time too.

incidentally, using the web interface, copied 800 mb from the USB Flash Disk to the 7200 SATA disk and took about 1-2 minutes.

Thank you all for valuable comments.

As I am not so technically advanced like you guys I feel like a dumb consumer who had high expectations from the beginning.

answer to some points above... yes I was taking out the SD card from camera and putting it directly into my laptop and transfering first to my laptop.

I actually use Allsync myself too and using that I tried to upload the pic+movies from my laptop to Pogoplug through wireless connection. I have a Belkin's N Wireless Router (http://www.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=459569 ) router and 24MBit connection from my internet provider.

I will try the solution to connect a card reader directly to PP and try to transfer through web interface to the PP USB harddisk...lets see what happens.
but this time i will respect the natural speeds of usb 2.0 etc ofcourse..holding my fingers crossed.

btw, confirmed up download speed on the network with my Pogoplug resides on has a rate of only 1.32 megabits down and 1.30 up using speedtest.org. my upload finished just fine although it took a while. maybe the ALLWAY SYNC software help a little-it has a way of limiting bandwidth when transferring files.

the speed sucks but streaming for the most part works. i stream to this network from a slingbox and a hava box and the picture is relatively clear and smooth and only reports using about 300-600 k..

Wow, my internet connect is 23.63 mbps down and 4.39 mbps up. And I just got a new computer and when uploading videos to my pogoplug via wi-fi I average about 5 mb per sec.

Yeah, my Internet is a dinky dsl connection. Cable is better.
