Your experience doesn't seem correct. You will always have the ability to stream from a Pogoplug device for the life of your Pogoplug.
Assuming you somehow aren't mistakenly streaming from your computer with Free software installed, please 'Submit a support ticket' using 'Help Center'.

I have the (pink) hardware. But now when I try to stream audio or video, I get a message that I need to upgrade to paid software.
I understand this is the case with having virtual non-hardware remote access, but now I've lost that access even with the drive plugged into the $80 hardware. Am I missing something?
