I'm looking for a way that I might be able to share photos and videos with family and friends and was intrigued by the pogoplug product but, like most things, the internet is filled with info that would indicate that things just don't work. I read reports of it taking days for the initial data load and then failure to access anything other than small text files. Other reports that some have had difficulty downloading files from the pogoplug -- I think they were referring to folders that contained a lot of photos, for instance. I'm assuming that I'm only hearing part of the story so I'm interested in hearing how others have fared with pogoplug.. My intent would be to attach a pogoplug device to my Time Capsule via ethernet and then attach an external drive to the pogoplug device. At that point I assume I would need to download some software??  At anyrate, I'd be interested in hearing how pogoplug might be working for others in a similar setting.

I am not happy with the product. I just found out today that shared videos are not transcoded. The friend or family member is going to "try" and watch the original file not the transcoded copy. Pogoplug suggested a workaround. I have the convert the video file manually and then share the file.

It is very disappointing that I have to manually transcode the shared video.

I believe that takes the magic and convenience of the Pogoplug.

I can be at my office share the video file to my friends and family and they can watch the video from the office or home.

Ooops I can't, I have to go home transcode manually first, because the video it is going painfully slow, because shared files are not transcoded

It is too bad

Photos: yes.
Videos: not so much.

I've been using Pogoplugs (I have 2 of them) on a daily basis for over a year now and it's made my life so much easier (I'm a telecommuter for my company). I use it for so many things: I have a website that I use to share pictures with my family and friends where all the albums are hosted on the Pogoplug (http://goo.gl/92BI8) as well as files that my clients access, as well as work-related documents and reports and so much more. I literally access my Pogoplug at least twice a day...including weekends.
However, I will say that if STREAMING video (as opposed to simply storing it) is a deal-breaker, I would look elsewhere. I've yet to have a satisfactory video streaming experience with either of mine unless I'm on my LAN and access the video through the desktop application. If you're not going to be sharing video or wanting to watch them from other devices, then I would recommend a Pogoplug. You can get one online for $50...it's one hell of an investment imho. Is the technology perfect? No. Do I sometimes get frustrated? Yes. Do I regret my purchase? Hell no.

Thanks for the info. I was mostly thinking of using it to store Photos and Videos so that my children and my parents could access them whenever why would like. It sounded like a nice idea. I was also considering putting my iTunes library on there as well and then accessing the music from work but that's not a big deal particularly since I think that Apple's soon to start iCloud will likely allow me to do that anyway. Just out of curiosity, what kind of things are you accessing daily and would something like dropbox work just as well? Thanks again for your input. I'm really interested in getting a pogoplug but can't seem to find enough "positive" feedback to confirm that it's a good idea.

Accessing photos for me is a pretty simple task. I too wanted to move my iTunes library to my pogoplug, but found that iTunes took too long to load up songs. I had almost 80 gigs of music and trying to locate one song was a bit time consuming. I've found that using Winamp speeds things up a bit.

The kind of files I access daily are pretty standard:
Spreadsheets
Word documents
PDFs
JPG/PNG images
HTML files on occasion

I work from multiple computers throughout the day which is why I use mine so frequently. On the weekends, im usually building websites and also use multiple computers for that process...so for my needs, a pogoplug is a godsend. But again, if video is a big deal, you will more than likely be disappointed.

Another thing that I really appreciate about this product is that those wanting to see files do not have to create an account to do so. A lot of people have stressed to me how inconvenient it is for them to hand out their email address and create yet another password to access shared content, but with the pogoplug, all they have to do is click on a link in an email...super easy for anybody to do.

Another thing you need to keep in mind is your internet connection. If people outside of your LAN will be accessing files connected to your pogoplug, your upload speed will greatly impact their experience.

Hope this all helps you make an informed decision.

Hi
there is not much I can add, however, for me it is important to say: Everything besides videos works GREAT with Pogoplug. If you share photos, documents or music it is amazing what this little thing can do. What is left is to make things a little easier for those people you share with. I have mentioned this several times now but repeat it anyways (hoping that CE will listen :-) ). Something like the Jukebox is truly fantastic but this is for the moment only available for the PP owner. It should be available for those people I share my music with.
Also despite negative opinions you can read in the forums I still believe that 'Active copy' to back up files works very well too. And the PP software (free or paid version) is great, too.
Bottom line: Pogoplug is a great tool to share media etc. with other people. the functionality is great, plus YOU control what happens (or not) because it is YOUR personal cloud and not data which is sent to an anonymous server somewhere.
Still there is a construction site to work on but I am sure the fine people at CE will go down the correct avenue.

Thanks everyone for your input. Despite the video limitations, I'm getting more inclined to give it a go and see how it works out. Thanks again.

mines basically works for the limited scope of media sharing. my expectations are so low that if it exceeds it, I am generally pleased. it generally works okay for a device that consumes less than 5 watts of power and costs around 35-50$.

doesn;t stop me from trying to "push the envelope" on occasion. tried copying 3 gigs of mwdium sized video files from it simultaneously to an Android device sdhd card directly and it failed miserably-disconnected and alot of broken transfers. it could have been any combo of the weak hardware, congested wifi, flakiness of the android app and tablet/phones, non multi taking nature of usb 2.0 storage devices.....but usually copying 1 file at a time works. plus copying to a pc with a Android device attached via USB worked fine.
