(I apologize...this is my 2nd attempt at posting a message. I was told I need my email verified to make this visible...it IS verified and still invisible. Not sure what else I need to do.)

Hello all,

New to the whole Pogoplug thing and I think I'm going to find it very useful. I can access my home computer from work (I'm a teacher)... VERY nice indeed! :)

Just wondering if there is an advantage of using the Pogoplug HARDWARE over the software (which I'm currently using).

Thanks much!

Ted

One of the biggest advantages of the hardware is that it is "always-on," and lives as a separate device from your main PC/Mac. Meaning that if you go on vacation or a work trip, you can turn off your more power hungry computers and just stream your files from the dedicated Pogoplug.

Also, the Pogoplug BIZ hardware comes with some special benefits you may or may not use, depending on your role at work.

Hi Peter,

Thanks very much for taking the time to respond. I can see that being a clear advantage.

I don't know much about the BIZ; I guess I have some research to do. :)

Thanks again!

Tedology,

I agree with Peter, not having to leave my computer powered on is a big advantage of having a dedicated PP device. Also, lots of folks these days have only a laptop computer, which is great for mobile computing but not a great cloud server platform, so the dedicated PP device is a better solution there as well.

I also like having the dedicated PP device because it provides me the option of backing up my medio (1 copy on my PC, and one on the PP device). Note: This is not meant to say that the PP is designed as an NAS or backup device, but copying archive copies to\from the PP is a nice advantage.

The software solution does have one significant advantage: It's generally easier to copy your media (from other sources) to the PC vs doing across the LAN. That said, when I have a large amount of data to my to the HDD on my dedicated PP device, I simply dismount the HDD, plug it into my PC, tranfer the data, then re-attach it to the PP.

Hi X, thanks very much for chiming in. You bring up excellent points about the hardware being a great choice for a laptop's mobility. :)

I leave my desktop on all day so at least when I'm in my classroom, I can have access to it.

Should I find that this isn't meeting my needs, I will definitely purchase a PP hardware unit. :)

I just wish I had found PP earlier! ;)
