I bought the device because I saw on the feature grid it offered always on.  I thought that meant it would configure WOL for the attached file server... not that it meant it could only be connected to external harddrives.  I'm assuming what I need is the pogoplug software so I can user a file server as the host... do I need to return the device or does the device include the software as well?

you download the normal sofftware for it, but you dont need to pay the pro version for it, because u can already stream movies and music from the device.

Not sure where you got the inference that the PP device somehow attached to a file server, or would configure WOL. The PP device is a low power (much lower than a typical file server), stand-alone network device so it can be left on all the time with little impact. That way, your file server is free to go into stand-by mode, if that's what you like.

If you want your file server to run the PP software and act as the PP server then, yes you should have purchase the PP Premium Software and not the PP device.

Their online and in box documentation is really horrible, I didn't realize the device only connects to external hdd enclosures... it really should at least scan shared network devices and make them stream-able. I tried to cancel my order within an hour or so after I ordered it but they said it was too late... its on its way back now.

I find their documentation to be pretty good. Check out this page, it explains very well how the device works. Nothing is said about scanning networked devices, etc., so not sure how you came to that conclusion. Again, it's a stand-alone device that you connect storage devices to via USB. I hope that the software does what you want, sounds like a better fit for you.

What do you mean about streaming movies from the device? I have found this to not work very well at all. I have the pogoplug basic version and it requires a lengthy video conversion process to get it to work. Not convenient when you have hundreds of movies and never know which one you want to watch. Is there another method of streaming these movies?
