You don't have to buy the Extended service. If using the Pogplug site to purchase it you can delete the extended service deal by clicking on the trash can.

I don't use the mobile streaming so can't comment on it, but if you want the ability to Stream to Xbox^® 360, Playstation^® 3, most media players and Internet-enabled TVs you would need the Premium software.

In making a decision to buy, it all depends on how you have everything setup and plan to use it.

For example I have a Pogoplug unit. I can Active Copy all my media to it. Then I can turn  on its ability to stream to most media players and use the Pogoplug to do so. In doing this I don't need a computer to be on to stream media.

You could install the free software and until you see that you are lacking a particular feature then you can consider upgrading at that time.
