If you currently own a Pogoplug Video, you need to be aware of a recall that was just recently announced, caused by some very rare hardware problems.

Rare though the issue may be, if you own a Pogoplug Video, make sure you unplug it immediately and read the full details of the recall below on Pogoplug's official blog.

Are you planning on fixing the issue and so we can do a possible swapping of units or are you just recalling all video pogo plugs with the intent of not fixing the issue?

Any news to report on the recall? I've got two very expensive pogoplug video devices sitting here collecting dust.

MORE INFORMATION ON THIS WOULD BE NICE

This is just typical service I've come to expect from cloud engines. Major worldwide recall and not even a mention of it on their homepage.

According to the email I just received the Pogoplug video is being mothballed (as in discontinued indefinitely).

People who bought a video are being offered both a Pogoplug Business (retail $299) and Pogoplug premium software license (retail $29) as a replacement. That or Pogoplug will refund your purchase price for the Video (only if purchased directly from Pogoplug).

So what makes the "Business" so much different than the "Video"? "Business" will not go up in flames?

How long has the "Business" been on the market?

How long has the "Video" been on the market?

Will Best Buy refund the $30 for the "Premium" software that has been registered? Or are we SOL?

Why should we trust PogoPlug? If we exchange our "Video" for the "Business", get it and don't like it...according to the e-mail we are SOL...this might be the end of anything Pogo Plug!

How about this gem that I found. I would rather have them replace the PPvideo with PPpro's. What does the business give me except slow transfer speeds. Multiple accounts...HA!

"Why are local transfers made between Pogoplug Biz sub-accounts slower than my own transfers?
Biz sub-accounts are treated as virtual users despite the fact that you have linked them to a physical drive on Pogoplug. Consequently, all data transfers are routed through the Pogoplug service, which can result in slower transfer speeds. These speeds are similar to what you would experience if accessing your Pogoplug remotely."

The business doesn't have the more powerful processor that the video had since the business doesn't do on the the fly transcoding. Actually the business is a poor substitute for the video.

The entire Pogoplug team is very sorry for the inconvenience the recall may have caused you. We rushed the recall as soon as we received a credible report of overheating/fire hazard. We were so busy scrambling to email all our customers, distributors and retailers that we did not have time to update our WWW site. You will see the updates are now posted on our main WWW page, as well as our support WWW page.

We feel that Pogoplug Business ($299 retail value) plus Pogoplug Premium Software offers a compelling and hassle free exchange option to our customers, but you are welcome to pursue a full refund through your retailer. Also, we are happy to exchange your Pogoplug Video for a standard Pogoplug, but please note the standard Pogoplug retails for $99 and has less features than Pogoplug Business.

If you have any specific concerns or requests, please contact us at VideoRecall@cloudengines.com. As always, thank you for your patience and support!

Andrea,

You should instruct your social media folks that they need to raise this announcement via those channels. I see no outright mention there (Facebook/Twitter).

June 21, 2011 8:29 PM

Looks like the announcement was just posted to Facebook. And it looks like one customer already has recognized you for it.

Good work, CE.

Kurtois - thank you for the reminder!

I was not aware that we had an option to replace our PogoVideo devices with PogoBiz plus the prmeium software upgrade! Now I am bummed out because I just UPS'd back to Buy.com my PogoVid device and I just paid for the premium software upgrade. Am I SOL for not getting all this new information regarding an exchange or replacement?

What is it that actually causes the surge that burns up the unit.
Is it the continual usuage (watching one movie after another, no idle time between movies)
or
Once in a while ( having idle time but unit just heats up by itself burns up in flames without being used ).

I only watch a show once in a while , maybe 2 within 6 hours having idle time between them. total datarate is 341 and 421 bitrate of all my video. I have no issues with 3g streaming( this was before I used video pogoplug ). It could be that the datarate and bitrate they had tried too play was too much. and did start something because the chip couldnt handle the rate the video was captured at

It appears that the cause is a manufacturing defect - not tied to usage. As a result, we strongly advise everyone to unplug their units immediately and contact us for a refund or exchange (videorecall@cloudengines.com). Thanks!
