Any chance of a search option to view photos on pogoplug by place, using the gps metadata? How cool would that be! :)

I sorta like the idea.

Right now I use PhotoShop and homeGrown stuff to view and process the GPS coordinates in the EXIF data. Unfortunately, not a lot of cameras currently collect and store this type of information.

A fun alternative might be to use the Eye-Fi Professional SDHC card. It will geoTag pictures if there are Wi-Fi spots where the picture was taken.

For a few more dollars, you can do what I have to do in the boonies: buy a camera that has a port to connect a GPS unit. There are wires all over the place but it gets the job done.

I would be concerned about the length of time and the impact on the pogoplug's resources during indexing (a few thousand digital frames ever week or so). I am wondering if the impact would be like what happens with transcoding or thumbnail generation when there is a large volume that must be processed?

Maybe it would be possible to generate an index externally to the pogoplug for the GPS Coordinates and then have the pogoplug recognize the coordinate index file. Probably would still be a lot latency in lookUp when managing several terraBytes of pictures unless a very smart algorithm could be constructed. I'll bet the master coordinate/Name/Location file would be a whopper to cover pictures taken from all over the world!

I think it would be a great option.

I really like this idea as well. I started taking the time to geotag my photos because it's a really neat way to organize photos and view them, plus it also makes a great way to always remember where they were taken at.

pJim, that's the painful way of adding that info! Check out GeoSetter, http://www.geosetter.de/en/ , which is a free software that allows you to set the location via Google maps and you can even set the viewing direction for which way you were facing. iPhones record this data and it'll show in this program. Hope that helps!
