I can comment, so i do.
And what did you learn by this experience? Except that the pogoplug doesnt do what you expected...
I just acquired a used Pogoplug and it is NOTHING like what I expected. I thought I was going to get a network drive-sharing device. I was expecting to plug in a hard drive and see it on my network. Period.
Furthermore, I fully expected to be able to access it wirelessly. The whole point was to put my file sharing device somewhere OTHER than right next to my router, which is in the most inconvenient place in the house.
The Pogoplug material I looked at online never made any of this clear. I would NEVER have considered Pogoplug if I had understood any of what I'm seeing now. Share all my files through an online service?? Seriously?? WHO WOULD DO THAT??
I just want LAN access. That's all.
A user named 454SS asked the same question a few days ago. It's a simple question, but he got no straightforward answer.
I don't want to start a debate, and I don't want insults, I just want LAN access.
If there's no straight-up control panel to go to, forget it.
I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.
I am new too. Before I downloaded and installed the Pogoplug software to my computer, I was not able to see the "pogoplug" harddrive, but after I installed the software, I was able to see it, not as a network drive, but as a local drive connected to my computer.
Well, I'm sorry to say that you probably have the wrong device... The Seagate Goflex version of the device has straight NAS capabilities, but also includes the other PP remote features. Honestly, in your position, I'd cut my losses and look at something like the Seagate BlackArmor NAS devices. I'm guessing you've got a wireless router- If not, I'd look at a wireless router with a USB port for an external drive, like a Cisco Linksys 610n. An inexpensive external drive will give you the features you desire. BTW, I've never seen a decent Wi-Fi NAS device. Seagate has one that's just been released, but it's geared more for iPad/portable streaming use.
I know it's not exactly what you're looking for, but I hope this all helps...
is this another case where someone trying to use a pogo plug for something it;s not really intended for?
maybe they should write a FAQ that explains what the pogoplug is and isn;t. I know it;s linux based and everyone expects it be a swiss army knife utility that does everything but in the end, it;s a low power, low speed media sharing device that relies on Cloud Engine's servers to publish your content. it has to be a specific format though and the transcoding feature is a little weak. it;s for media files. it;s not a nas or a server(although it could be if you hack it).
by the way, sharing your files through an online service is being done by Dropbox, Amazon and Google now except in those cases, your files are on their systems.
the beauty of the "cloud" approach is for remote access-you have access to your files using a web interface or lightweight client. this is for the people who don;t want to setup and maintain a server and use a service like dyndns to give them a friendly name. you could setup a more flexible and higher performing solution but it;s going to cost you-time and money.
the pogoplug is a hybrid of these 2 approaches. the data sits on your site but Cloud Engines manages the access for you.
is it secure? what is secure? since CE has access to your data, i wouldn;t be relying on this solution for important documents. i think they targeted it toward a limited scope of media sharing. yet some people are pushing the envelope of what you can do with these.
Same deception for me.
I bought the Pogoplug in order to be able to mount some folders on the shared HD as network drives. I don't care at all about cloud and even less about web browser access.
This is plain impossible.
Just removed it and dumped it into the trash. What a waste.
And this was not clear at all on the website.
I purchased the device under the same impression and I am seriously upset that this was not made clear in their promotional material. All I wanted was network access at home to my external drive for network sharing capabilities with macs and pc. Pogoplug is being less than upfront about their product in my opinion. If I wanted cloud I would save some money and buy extra storage through google.......which I already have.
I am in a similar situation and as equally frustrated.
I wanted the cloud feature using my drives and storage, but the problem is load and managing the files. I have to load the stupid drivers on my machines. For many reasons too numerous to list here, I re-image my machines and try different distros on a regular image. It takes me less than an hour to install the operating systems and all of the software EXCEPT the PP software. To install and configure the PP driver and tune it takes me as much time as all of the rest combined. Additionally, I have had AT LEAST a dozen times that for numerous reasons I have not been able to get to my data because Pogoplug.com or my IPS was down, but if they simply let up have a direct network connect like the Dockstar then I would have access. I specifically researched and ask the BestBuy people if this was a NAS device before I bought it. The BB people both said that it would turn my HDDs into NAS drives and all of the reviews say that it is a NAS/Cloud device. The trouble is just like most of the USB extenders and file/print servers, they all rely on a driver and in the case of PP, they rel on connecting to PP.com.
Moderators, why can't CE simply give us the access to our data ALL the time unless they have something to hide about what they are doing with our data?
With customer support like this, I would not be surprised that I try and log in one of these days to find CE is bankrupt and our devices are all WORTHLESS, because there is no PP.com to give us access.
install samba see following link, if you need more help then email me. You can also install torrent, dlna etc and also your my.pogoplug functionality will be there.
first install putty then ssh into pogoplug then
