Hi. I'm sure this has probably been asked before. but I have a worry and hope you can help...

I have a (wired) pogoplug with one pogoplug enabled device (hard drive). I have active copy set up so that all my photos, music and docs are automatically copied to my pogoplug enabled device. However, although my computer is password protected my pogoplug enabled device is not. Therefore is someone steals my hard drive from my pogoplug they can access all the stored informaiton without a password. Is there a way of securing the informaiton on teh hard drive?

BP.

Probably not a solution for your situation; however, you might give this some consideration ...

In addition to theft, inadvertant sharing could also result in open access to your media/data collections.

It is also likely that the media/data is not shared since, by nature, the sharing of intellectual property eventually makes it a public resource that cannot be returned to a private state.

What I do to protect my intellectual property is to use PKWare zip software to encrypt anything that I do not want accessed without my explicit permission. Granted it is an RPIA!

For the media that I want to stream or review I do the following. I dumb down the resolution for video, I reduce the bit rate for music, I reduce the size/color/pixels in pictures, and for docs/presentations/data I use openoffice and it encryption feature. I also watermark with Digimark when appropriate.

Once I have my media prepared, I upload to the plug. This way I protect myself from the the video-and-music policing-zealots and I also protect my stuff to the degree possible yet allow access as necessary.

The way I read your comment, you are concerned with someone gaining physical access to your hard drive. This is very difficult to protect against. I can suggest you use a freeware product called Truecrypt. You can store all your data in an encrypted file, then mount that file as a "drive" on your computer. It behaves like a regular drive and you can use active copy to move data from one encrypted drive to another. Once you turn off TrueCrypt, the drives are nothing more than a file called yourfile.tc. I can NOT be opened, as it is encrypted using AES. If you have a proper password on the encrypted volume, it is practically impossible (nothing is actually impossible) to gain access to your data, even if they have the hard drive.

I just tested by plugging in my USB drive where I store my truecrypt.tc file into the pogoplug. I ran truecrypt on my local computer, had it mount the truecrypt.tc file as drive V. It then behaves like a regular drive on your machine. Copy, add, sync, do whatever you want to that drive, and then dismount it. Your data is AES protected. Email me if you want to further discuss how to do this.
