I have a BlackArmor NAS and a PogoPlug Pro. If I install the PogoPlug software on my PC, map an NAS drive to my PC, and then mount that through the PogoPlug software, then the NAS drive will show up in the PogoPlug website IF my laptop is on. I don't think there is a way to map the NAS drive directly to the PogoPlug, but then again, I have not tried to map it using an IP or server address.
If I get a chance to experiment, I will post the results. I am trying not to stress the PogoPlug because that usually causes it to crash. Right now I'm trying to find out how to make it dependable.
I'm getting a NAS device, and I'm curious if a Pogoplug will be able to basically broadcast it online. I am looking at Synology DS110J, for example, for use over LAN, but I would also like use on the road. Anybody try this?
How do you mount the NAS through the Pogoplug software? I can't seem to find the steps.
I don't think there are any official steps. This is something I just happened to come across during normal use of both the NAS and Pogoplug. It's been a while since I had that setup. My NAS is currently offline for some reason so I can't verify anything, but I will try to walk through it from memory. This was also one using an older version of Pogoplug. I don't know if it will still work with the latest version.
Have your PC and NAS up and running normally.
I think your NAS must support Windows File Sharing and this must be enabled on your NAS.
Verify that you can see your NAS as a network drive.
On your PC, map your NAS as a local drive. Set it up so that it will do this every time you start Windows. This is exactly the same as if you were mapping an external USB drive.
Reboot your PC and verify your NAS is mapped as a local drive letter.
Install the Poplug software on your PC, if it is not already installed.
Go into the settings section where you specify which areas of your PC will be shared using Pogoplug. You should see your PC C drive and all other local drives including your NAS. Select which drives, or portions of drives you want to share. This is standard Pogoplug functionality, so the exact steps will be in the help section.
Start up Pogoplug and verify that you now have access to your NAS through Pogoplug.
This setup works because Pogoplug simply sees the NAS as another external drive mounted on your PC. So follow the steps for mounting your local PC drive through Pogoplug. Your NAS and your PC must be left on continuously for Pogoplug to have access to it.
Hope this helps.
At least with the V3 and "Classic" (the ones that have the PLX chip in them) can mount the shares from the Synology directly via samba (CIFS). All you need to do is to attach a thumb drive that will hold the mount point.
It looks like the solutions would require for the PC to be on at all times (which is not what I am looking for).
I hope Pogoplug would allow for it to done without the need for a PC in the future.
Here is how to mount a CIFS share on your pogoplug. I've covered it before.
