I won a Pogoplug as part of a prize giveaway at a promotional launch party for a company unrelated to Pogoplug.  I am not in direct contact with the person who originally registered this Pogoplug, so I went to Pogoplug's website.  After finding my problem in the knowledge base, I followed the directions and emailed a request for support to their support@pogoplug.com email address.  In the message, I included the ID of the device.

Three emails requests (over the past few days) later, I have received no response at all from Pogoplug Support.  I understand that this process could take some time (trying to contact the previous person who registered the device to make sure it is ok to unregister the device, etc), but I would at least expect SOME form of acknowledgement to let me know what this process would entail, and that I wasn't being ignored.  This leads me to a couple of questions of those who have these devices and/or have experiences dealing with Pogoplug support:

  1. Is this typical of Pogoplug Support?  If this is the case, I'm not sure if I can trust their claims as to how secure the device actually is (has there ever been updates from this company for their devices for things like identified vulnerabilities?), which makes me question if I should even use this device.

  2. If I can't use this device in the manner it was intended for, are there any suggestions as to what I CAN use it for?  I can't sell it or give it away, anyone else will have the same problem.  Everything I have read about modifying the device involves first having it activated, are there any modifications that don't involve prior activation?

The concept for this device sounds pretty cool.  Reviews that I have heard

At this point I am going to keep trying to get in contact with Pogoplug support, but it is looking like I am going to have to return the device to the company that gave it away.  I'm just really glad I didn't waste my money on a company that, so far, really doesn't seem to care.

What is your Support ticket number and we'll look into this? This definitely isn't the norm.

I have no support ticket number. As per the knowledge base, I emailed the support@pogoplug.com with no response.

The page in the knowledge base that I am referencing is:

You should have received an automated response with your ticket number. Support is very responsive with activation issues.

Have you checked your spam recently?

If you can't find any correspondence from Support, send me a PM with the email you used to submit your ticket and we'll look into this.

I checked my spam before my second email.

PM Sent.

Chris, thanks for the very quick response, my pogoplug is registered and working.

For the forum:
The problem was actually Pogoplug Support not being able to email for some reason... They probably unregistered my pogoplug shortly after my first email.

Thanks again!

Pogoplug is a complete waste of time. I have spent 4 hours trying to get some support for their product but get no email respnse and there is no phone number.

I am now taking their Equipment back to the shop to exchange it for an Iomega equivalent.

I will never buy anything from this company again, as their customer support is very poor.

Kunle, you may be experiencing the same problem as I was... I felt the same way you do now, and I won my PogoPlug as opposed to having spent money on it. As it turns out, the problem for me was that for some reason their email system was not sending messages to me.

Post a new thread on this forum with you problem as the thread subject. I think their support team actually monitors this forum, I had a response to my new thread in 10 minutes, and the problem was solved within an hour and a half. I don't know if this is typical, but it is worth a shot.

Dear Pogo Plug:
I have an account with you (have had one for several months) but I can NO LONGER log into my acct since I'm always told that User name and Password don't match. I've tried again about an hour ago to get a new password which your response stated that I would receive immediately but I didn't get anything. Please I need to get into my storage of material which I have not been able to do for several weeks. PLEASE HELP!!!This is several attempts with no response from you. Regards, FZH@comcast.net

Did you try going to http://www.pogoplug.com/support.html or emailing them at support@pogoplug.com. That should get you the quickest help.

Ok I have two or possibly three 'catch 22' situations here.
I previously had a dockstar, and it was ok, although slow.
My currant internet is limited to either wifi via public hotspots and/or wifi
tether to a sany zio droid. (Shows up as ad-hoc) I jumped at the chance to get
a PRO unit because it said it has 802.11b/g/n wifi! wow...
BUT
How do you access an un-activated device to configure the wifi so you can activate it?
Oh gee, software... Umm, wait, I'm totally UBUNTU here. Or droid.
One of the links in the KB was to cnet for 64bit software for linux, downloaded
an EXE file! (great job there boys)
Call support? (NOPE, NO NUMBER as mentioned above)

Can I just email them the serial of the box? I know command line wifi a bit, can
I ssh to unit and iwconfig the wifi? if so will it run ad-hoc or if not can I run elinks or something to put credentials into captive portal?

This whole thing leaves a bad taste of M$-centric attitude in my mouth.
For something touted as being embeded ARM linux system I'd expect better.
(I read that I can't even flash it to another linux till it's registered?)
Wow.

the pogoplug needs to wired and connected to the internet to be activated. once activated, you can go to the my.pogoplug.com to enable the wireless.

unfortunately, the pogoplug is not a standalone unit with a built in config webpage.

September 8, 2011 1:58 PM

Right, so is it right to say it has wifi support without a caveat on the box
saying 'oh by the way, it must be activated on a wired connection to use it at
all'?
They go so far as saying 'external storage required'.
If it has wifi would/should it not grab the strongest 'open' connection then have
a way to run another pc on same wlan register it? That is all the ethernet is doing.
My guess is that the engineers saw a bunch of ppl putting wifi dongles into the
pogo and said, 'we should just slap a $0.49 radio in there and call it a wireless
device'.
Why can't someone admin it via it's lan ip? Is this a support/payment scam?
Ie:when they get x number out there using the system, surprise it's $30/month ?
(without their servers we're screwed, right?) (IE:if/when the company folds?)

For a system that does things a better way, look at ubiquity wifi hardware.

they've discontinued the pogoplug pro so maybe they heard you.

as far as I know, there is no reason to pay anything extra to manage the device. i don;t know what the premium desktop software gets you or if it;s really necessary-i thought it was only for if you want to turn a pc into a pogoplug sharing host.

if you bought the device, what you have bought into is if they go out of business your device is useless. you an always hack it to put archlinux on it and do away with the dependency. maybe they get paid for the clicks on their website. however, I don;t see any ads on it.

September 8, 2011 8:45 PM

Ok, so I borrowed an evdo modem, jacked it into my cradlepoint ctr-500 router,
PP-Pro now has ip, went all the way through activation phase and the email has
not arrived to 'activate' the device, WTF now?
Is this device not supported any longer? (Do I have an overpriced paperweight?)

September 9, 2011 8:43 AM

i have a pro and it;s working fine. i am a little concerned of the lack of updates but it;s working.

i don;t recall getting an email to activate my device. if you are expecting one, maybe it got sent to your spam folder?

when you go to the my.pogoplug.com website, is there a button for activating the device where you have to put your unique id into the webpage if it can;t find it?

given your situation with limited internet, the pogoplug cloud features are NOT going to work for you because it needs a FULLTIME internet connection to be functional.

your only recourse is hack it by installing OpenPogo/ArchLinux on it. if you go this route, your device will behave like a standalone linux server and you can install SAMBA, NFS and other services. it will NOT be using the cloud services and you won;t be using my.pogoplug.com or their client software to access and manage it. however, 1 condition must be met-you do need to register the device successfully so you can go into my.pogoplug.com and enable SSH. once you do this, you can hack it to your hearts content and replace the firmware. i originally bought my Pro to do this but haven;t yet.
