i don't think you really need to transcode video files on the PGP for them to play. I have turned off transcoding for the time being. If you need to format them, do it offline using a separate PC and a program like Handbrake.
i think you can get around it by playing the original provided it is already in a format your device can handle-resolution and encoding wise. the transcoding us supposed to do that for you but as you can see from all the forum threads about it, it does not work reliably. if it did anything, you might get a 10 second preview after 24 hours of processing.
keep in mind alot of default players can only understand H.264 or MP4/MKV so if you try to read a AVI file, it will spit back an error message. in the case of my Android phone, i changed my default player to vPlayer and now I can read AVI files adequately. the default player and alot of the free players in the market use the google provided video rendering engine so they can only read H.264 or MP4/MKV.
goodluck!
Can I prevent having to Transcode video files by saving them to my Pogoplug connected HDD in a certain format? I am using Ext3 and have converted my videos to H.264, but I am still prompted to Transcode videos prior to streaming them on remote computers. Is there a way to avoid Transcoding, or should I just bite the bullet and buy the Pogoplug Video? Thanks for your help!
FYI - My Pogoplug is connected to one of the Gigabit ports on an Asus RT-N56U router, has been flashed to the most current Firmware. I have a connected a 500-GB Iomega USB Drive to the Pogoplug, but need to verify which model it is.
Thanks,
Mark - Pogoplug Newbie, PC/Linux/Dos Oldie
