On Toms Hardware a poster noted that his fear was the PP could be exposed to hackers.  He suggested we monitor the ports for unusual activity.  How would I monitor my ports for unusual activity ?

If I never have a need to access my data from the internet is my PP still exposed.  I am very nervous now about my PP now.. I am so nervous I have unplugged it from the router :(  I am afraid I have wasted my money.

Since the Pogoplug has been available I can't remember anyone saying that they had theirs hacked or accessed without permission.

If you are concerned and want to monitor your router and the address of the Pogoplug there are tools out there that can do that.  If you only access your Pogoplug when at home (or wherever your Pogoplug is) then just plug it in when you need it.

For example I have one Pogoplug and hard drive dedicated to doing backups only. So I plug it in every few days and Active Copy takes care of my backup and then I unplug them again. I don't unplug becuase I am afraid of hacking I just do it because I don't need to have both the Pogoplug and Hard drive running when no one will be accessing them. Just for less wear and tear and power consumption.

Use strong passwords, make sure you log out of your account if you access your Pogo outside your home. The usual security measures...

From my understanding pogo don't open port on your router, it uses encrypted connections to central servers, and when you access it, you are actually going through their server, that maybe is the reason it's so painfully slow.
So basically it's highly unlikely it can be hacked, unless the central servers are exploited.
I use tcpdump to monitor the traffic and draw this conclusion, you can try yourself.

In your original post you noted that a poster's "fear was the PP could be exposed to hackers". Just because one person "fears" something, doesn't make it so. When I was a kid, I used to "fear" the monster under my bed. Just because I feared the monster, didn't mean that it was a real threat and eventually I realized that the monster only wanted to eat dust bunnies.

The PP implementation is very secure and, as already mentioned, the rest is up to you: Strong password (check yours here), logout when not in use and I'd add to not allow your browser to save your password.
