Under Preferences is a tap call Remote Access, exactly what is remote access and how does it work.

Example: I have a network on my wirless router and selected it for access, it is selected for remote access so how does this work throught the pogo plug? It does not show up any where or on any screen online. I am not sure what exactly this is good for.

REMOTE ACCESS ...
Maybe simply defined is the "client" (you) giving the "server" (them) access to files in folders on your device (computer).

Maybe said another way: The "client" (you) must grant access to the "defined" general/generic/default/specific folders so that files, in the folder(s), can be transferred using Active Copy from the "client side" (you) to the Pogoplug.

When you launch the Pogoplug software, that you downloaded from the Pogoplug site, during the signOn sequence, you are given the option to "Select Folders For Remote Access" from what I would call the general/generic/default selection (All the "MY" Folders like documents, music, pictures, videos, and the desktop).

Whatever is in these folders "WILL" transfer to the Pogoplug associated with the eMail address you used to logIn. You can uncheck to prevent accidental file transfer should Active Copy be started; or, leave as is if you want to automatically move files from the computer you are using DURING THE LOGIN SESSION when Active Copy is started. If Active Copy is left engaged in the "start" mode, new files, in these folders, will be transferred without the need for your intervention.

Specific selection for Remote Access is something you have to define in Pogoplug Preferences under the Remote Access TAB. This allows you to select a folder of "your" choice to be remotely accessed and its contents transferred.

So, I think, this is, in a nutshell, a possible, and simple, response to your curiosity about Remote Access and how it works.

I would suggest that if you use it especially if you use computers of others that you be watchful of what you collect unintentionally. On the other hand, it could be very embarrasing if what you collect is not what you expect.

Good luck ...

I would not use that remote access. You are allowing of sharing folder/file from your PC. If you want to share something, put it on the USB drives.

The Remote Access tab lets you access and share files directly from your computer, the same way you do from your Pogoplug. Any folders that you enable as available for Remote Access can be seen when you sign in to your Pogoplug account at my.pogoplug.com or any of the Pogoplug mobile apps. Nothing is ever transferred off your computer unless you request it. You can add or remove folders that are remotely available or turn off the feature any time from the Remote Access tab.

The reason I say don't use the remote access is that you might forget that folder is being shared. Later down the road, you put stuff in that folder you might not intended for everyone to see.

But I do see how it could be useful.

I have enabled remote access on my laptop and on my desktop. Under the web login for pogoplug, there are two instances listed for my desktop. When my desktop is on, only one of the instances registers, the other remains perpetually 'offline'. How do I remove the doubled instance?

1.To use remote access right click on the pogoplug icon in the system tray and select preferences.
2.Click on the remote access tab.
3.Select the on radio button.
Remote access is not required for the drives on pogo plug, it is required for folders on your computer, without remote access on you cannot backup files to your pogoplug.
If you want to share files create a folder and name it your friends name like Jim and then place in the folder the items to share and then only share that folder with Jim.

@Evelyn

Pogoplug software is working correctly on your desktop. With two or more installations of software, they should ALL appear at my.pogoplug.com. However, on your desktop, the only 'Remote Access' Pogoplug shares you should see are for your laptop. You desktop Pogoplug shares are NOT remote in this case.

Otherwise, if you want to remove Pogoplug software altogether, open Pogoplug preferences and 'Unregister this computer'.

Hope this makes sense,

Christopher

I'm a computer illiterate, and sorry if this has been already discussed (I didn't see it) -- but I would be interested in your comments to this idea I have:
I use pogo in my office, have external harddrives attached, and all of our client files have been digital-ized -- all employees (8 of them, and we frequently work remotely) access our client files via pogo. Two universal problems with the pogo device - it goes offline from time to time, and there are no good "back up" solutions (carbonite, etc.) - I'm thinking about ditching the pogo device, and setting up a dedicated computer (desktop or laptop) with external drives attached (the external drives that previously were attached to my pogo), enabling remote access for those drives, and allowing my office (8 people) to access the drives via remote access to that computer, instead of going through the pogo device. This would seem to solve the backup problem (I assume that external harddrives easily can be backed up to a system like carbonite, unlike the harddrives attached to the pogo device). What am I missing here? Any thoughts?

Hi Roughrider,

Yes, you can use your desktop computer for this purpose. Pogoplug is a great device but from a hardware perspective, you computer has a couple advantages, namely a powerful CPU and graphics processor.

Also, depending on the size of your backup you can use Pogoplug Cloud for your remote backup repository. Right now only 5GB is available (it's free! http://pogoplug.com) but we'll provide upgrade options soon http://pogoplug.com/expansion

Kindest Regards, Christopher
