The pogoplug does have the option to use HTTPS ssl encryption, which isn't extremely secure with more modern hacking techniques. I'm personally more concerned about the pogoplug company itself. Basically when you sign on you go through their servers to access your device. If you have low security turned on then once you request a file you will connect directly to the pogoplug device itself. This is ideal since if your on the same network as the pogoplug your data speed isn't limited by your isp.
Point being pogoplug can access your files at anytime, and if they want to do statistics on what type of files people keep on their drives there's nothing really stopping them from scanning everyone's drives.
Similar to how apple has been logging everyone's location regardless of privacy settings on the phone
Great device if it works. I recently updated the somewhat buggy software and now i can't access drives without a web browser... Hopefully i will be helped soon

Quite tempted to buy one of these devices, the main use I see for it is sharing files between myself and wife who use different computers. How secure do people find the device as it is published on the internet. Persumably the security of the files is down to the access rights that you set up with the login/password on Pogo website? Can anyone randonly connect to the device and access files without the login/password?
I find the pogoplug to be secure. If you in the market for a cloud service, this one could not be any safer. Usually with a cloud service, you upload your files to a server (cloud) and your files are stored there. With the pogoplug, all your files are stored locally and you do not have to worry about the cloud service going out of business and so on. If you don't want your files shared anymore, simply unplug your drive and everything is off the web. Yes, when you open files via the web browser they are uploaded to the pogoplug servers for conversion, but Cloud Engines ensures us that none of your files are been saved except for web conversion. Of course there are always concerns and the easiest way to not put your self at risk is not to use any cloud service what-so-ever. But if you want/need the convenience of being able to access your files anywhere, then pogoplug would be my number one recommendation. Not to mention no monthly charges as compared to other cloud services with limited capacity.
What i'm really after is a device that does what the pogolug does but without the cloud aspect. i.e an affordable fileserver on the lan. However that said the convenience on the cloud might have some benefits and the price in uk (dixons via quidco) is outrageously cheap at the moment so gone for it :)
I have an idea re securing the files and if i'm right i''ll post a solution for those looking to make some of the files a little more secure
Try HomePipe. It's a cloud alternative. You can use the fully functional free version for instant remote access and online file sharing of any size file, anytime, anywhere from any Web browser or mobile device. You can share files without uploading, syncing and organizing files in the cloud. HomePipe is safe, secure and really easy to use. I use it for work, play and on the go since it works on mobile devices, too. There's no hardware to buy either. Try it. It's free at www.homepipe.net and register for free. Good luck!
That's not going to be useful for my 300gb+ of data I want to backup act as a fileserver and use the media server aspects. I tried the pogoplug device/software and was really impressed. However it had an issue which i'm surprised I haven't seen mentioned. The mapping of the p drive on the PC is far more processor and disc intensive than it should be. With it running my processor would run at 5-10%, with it off it is 0. It also appeared to be using disc activity which made game playing a little stuttery.
So I put a linux opensource solution on instead with minidnla and samba and I have the two solutions (the cloud aspect was really a side benefit which I wasn't interested in).
Not really sure why pogoplug didn't go for a samba solution as otherwise the whole thing was very slick.
Votre aide me serait bien précieuse.
Merci. Danilex
I would learn to use Truecrypt and put all sensitive info in a truecrypt folder then putting it on the drive. You create a folder and encrypt it. Safest method.
I don't trust this pogoplug so I only put movies and music on it. I have a separate system for file storage in my home network.
Agreed Truecrypr was going to be the option I chose, however the plugapps solution if you are not interested in the cloud aspect works better.
