I find the layout of the new software 3.0.1.0 (3.0.1.17) confusing

I see that I can specify paths for folders to enable for "remote access", but previously when I went through the steps to backup a folder, I could specify where on my pogo plug connected hard drive they would be saved.  This feature is now gone.  More so, I see now that I have a "pogo plug" device in my.pogoplug.com, and a reference for my computer.

I'm really unsure as to whether or note "remote access" is backing up files for my computer to my device, or whether it's just indexing the files on my drive and using my pogo device as a proxy to connect directly to my computer.

Why would it show up as a separate device in my.pogoplug.com now unless it's actually serving the files?  Is it backing them up to my drive?  I can't tell anymore.  There's no more progress indicator to show what % of the files have been backed up to my device (assuming it's actually backing up to my device)

These are fairly significant changes in the terminology used for backup and in the UI, and I'm left wondering if I've lost features or the product is working like I'd expect anymore.

A quick google search is no help and I don't feel like the "Help" or the UI in the desktop app clearly explain what remote access is, and why I now have a Computer showing up in my.pogoplug.com, and either way, it seems I can't specify where my files are being backed up on the device.  I had a custom backup path previosly, is it re-backing up every files on my computer to a static path now?

Ok, after messing around with the software for a while i have some more specific questions:

If I set a folder for "remote access", is that folder being backed up to my pogoplug device? If not, what is being done with it? What is remote access? The Pogo KB doesn't say what it really means, but it does say how to turn it on and off. Is remote access where you specify folders that on the drive that should be remotely accessible, or is it where you specify folders to be backed up to the drive? The whole functionality of the pogo device is that everything on connected drives is accessible from wherever I want, so I don't understand why I'd be specifying particular folders on the device that are or aren't accessible, and so if I'm indicating drives on my computer that the pogoplug is serving up, then where do I specify what I want to backup from my computer to my pogo plug? I'm the owner of device and should be able to remotely access everything, if I wanted to limit what's accessible I thought that's what the sharing feature is for.

Is active copy meant for only copying between folders/drives enabled on the pogo plug device? If so, I'm assuming that "active copy" is being used to backup folders from my PC to a drive on my pogo plug device, which might explain why my PC now shows up as a device in the my.pogoplug.com interface, and so I can specify the paths in the backup tab for source and destination, but is there anywhere I can see % progress on the copying? I feel like I can't find that anywhere.

I specified five folders for "remote access", but don't see anything listed in the "backup" tab. The backup tab seems to be where active copies are listed, but I see none. I saw one earlier today but it said it was to copy from "Root" on Pictures to a folder on my pogo device. Root of what? Is "active copy" a list of queued backup jobs or is it showing folders which are setup for remote access (which, I can't tell, may or may not mean folders that are being synched to my device)

I'm sorry for all the questions, but I really feel like the new UI changed a lot of terminology and functionality of the desktop software and I honestly don't know how I'm intended to use the software to simply backup a folder from my PC to the pogo plug device.

Hi glombus, I'll see if I can simplify a few things. The Desktop software, for several reasons--not the least of which is security--doesn't share your whole computer for remote access by default.

Thus, you need to specify to the app what you want to be available remotely. You could certainly just put your C: drive in there if you wanted to keep it easy :)

Active Copy is used as an easy way to one-way backup certain files and folders. You can backup from your computer to Pogoplug or from Pogoplug to Pogoplug, or to/from separate drives on the same Pogoplug. It's pretty flexible like that.

Thanks Peter.

Is Remote Access then a way to share files directly from my computer? It in no way involves copying data from my computer to my pogo plug enabled Hard Drive? That's a new feature and threw me off. The interface is very similar to what used to be used to backup folders from my PC to the drive.

Yep, you got it--remote access allows you to share directories on your computer's local hard drives over the Internet through the Pogoplug service--and does not copy any files to a separate USB drive you have connected to Pogoplug hardware (assuming that is how your setup works.)

Of course, if you wanted to do that, that's where Active Copy steps in. (You could use Active Copy to copy files from your local computer to a Pogoplug connected drive, for example, as a redundant backup)

Thanks for the clarification. I re-installed ppdrive 2.5 to compare to the 3.0 software.

I verified the old software prompted you to setup folders for 'active copy' at first run. That's fine. That's why I bought the device; to backup my parent's computer to a device on the LAN and to share files from that backup (photos specifically) with relatives over the web. Now, the change that not only confused, but upset me, is that the new version of the software uses a *very* similar interface at first run as the old software, but it's doing something totally different. It offers check boxes for the same type of folders as ppdrive 2.5 at it's first run, but instead of prompting me for 'active copy' folders, the 3.0 software is prompting me for 'remote access' folders.

The UI for this folder selection is extremely similar to the old software, but serves a totally different purpose and is very misleading in my opinion. I just assumed 'remote access' was new terminology for the same functionality I was used to, that being remote access to files on my the HD plugged into my pogo plug device.

This is the crux of my vexation. At *no* point do I want to share any content directly from my computer. I want to stage content from my computer to the HD plugged into my pogo device as a backup and just share the backup. I can see how remote access can be handy, but that's not something I want my device to do.

The older version of the software seemed just focused on backing up data and configuring options for that purpose, but now it's all about remote access and active copy is exclusively configured on the web interface. The backup aspect of the device seems more like a secondary feature now. And that's fine, remote access is cool, but it's not why I bought the product. I felt like I was given new features I didn't want and lost the reliability and focus on backup (and web accessibility to that backup) which is why I bought the product.

I appreciate the new features, and I see now how to do what I need and that I can just turn off 'remote access', but really, these are significant functionality changes that should have been clearly explained in the UI or elsewhere during the install. I had no idea what 'remote access' meant and couldn't find an answer. It also seemed like 'remote access' totally replaced the backup functionality I used to have in the desktop software.

I'll take another look at my device when I'm home later this week and confirm that I can setup everything as I'd expect.

Thank you.

Ok, I see how to do what I need. Thank you Peter.
