Why is it that when I open a word document, pogoplug uploads the document to their server for conversion... why can't pogoplug upload and queue up videos for conversion someplace faster?
Categories: Pogoplug Classic
Background: I've got a Pogoplug Pro with a Drobo 4-bay attached. It has about 550 GB of data on it. I use it as a network backup and central file storage.
Anytime I transfer a large amount of data to it (via Mac OS X with the drive utility), Pogoplug goes into "processing media..." for a long time, which completely destroys the processor and slows everything else down. I can't hit cancel, postpone, or anything.
I understand Pogoplug has to index everything so that it can search--that's fine. But it shouldn't take hours to do. If I eject the hard drive, and reattach, it will "scan media" for 3 minutes, and then it doesn't bother me again for a while.
VERY frustrating trying to use this device as a backup or storage when you can't transfer anything to it without bogging it down for hours.
That "media processing" is the main reason I stopped using my Pogoplug Pro. No matter what I did, everytime I added something it would bog down for hours.
My pogoplug has never stopped processing since I got it at the beginning of the year. So yep, it's been processing continuously for months. So I have no idea how fast the pogoplug can be. gee...
Yep, couldn't stand it. I returned my PP Pro today, and replaced it with a used Mac Mini. It's a shame--fantastic concept, but very poorly executed. NOT a functional NAS device.
I use it to mainly share photos, videos are stored as is and use nfs to read. I only got 100M ethernet, pogo totally fills the pipe in 12MB/s.
The only practically way to share videos is to encode first according to your client device's capacity and pogo's web interface speed, like in ipad I will encode 1200k mp4, outside my local network I'll change to iphone's standard only.
This pogo thing is really a good idea, but unfortunately it's executed so poorly ,really a shame, anyhow I got mine for about $50, so I'll keep it and hope in future revisions it'll improve.
It's not an issue of actual video encoding--I have all the encoding options turned off and have no videos, nor any interest in using it to share videos with my mobile devices. The problem is just when accessing it via the Pogoplug app on my Macs. At times, when it's not processing, I can read at over 20 MB/s, and write at almost 10 MB/s, which is great. Unfortunately as soon as it starts "processing" (what is it really processing, anyway? I have ALL MEDIA OPTIONS TURNED OFF), the speed gets really sporadic, laggy, and very unreliable. The only solution I've found is to eject and reconnect.
Maybe the system works fine for some, and for those, I'm happy for you. But unfortunately it simply wasn't working for me. I need to be able to transfer many gigabytes of data per day, and I simply couldn't do it at the speed and unreliability I was getting.
Now, having replaced it with a used Mac Mini Core 2 Duo, I can write to it at over 25 MB/s, and read at almost 30 MB/s. MUCH BETTER.
I turned off "Optimize your videos for playback" to never and my pogo sit idle since.
If I'm in this kind of situation, I'll first turn off all the media flags and ssh into pogo, delete the .cedata directory, and run re-scan again.

I'd like to also point out that I have all 3 options for media optimization and scanning DISABLED
