I recenly updated my iOS to 4.2.1 and my iphone pogoplug app.

After updating everything I was unable to upload new photos to my pogoplug device. I would get as far as choosing what picuture/video to upload and it would just sit there with a message that says "preparing" at the bottom.  I let it sit for a while but nothing happened. I was also having issues with my pixelpipe app getting media access errors. After flexing my google-fu muscles I found that pixelpipe requires location services to be enabled. Then came the "ahhh" moment.  I went back to my pogoplug app and enabled location services and allowed pogoplug to use location services and what do you know.  It worked like a charm and now I am able to send things from my iphone to my pogoplug again.

So why is it that I need to have my GPS turned on for pogoplug to work? I know some people like geo tagging and all that but, I for one don't like keep my location service on because of the battery drain and I always  feel like I'm being tracked by the FBI who wants to know if the pictures of my plate lunch I posted on yelp was actually taken Elena's.

If this is a bug please fix this.

I too find this annoying. Guess it just shows the drawback of using cloud services via an intermediary such as pogoplug. Unfortunately, box.net and other cloud storage systems suffer from similar restrictions. Using cloud drives run by a corporation, you're always dependant them to access YOUR files. I find it bizarre that people actually accept such a premise.

Anyway, take it as a sign to find alternatives to corporate owned cloud services, such as your own linux installation.

it's not a bug, it's how Apple API works :-(
