Do the videos need to be transcoded in the premium version before they can be watched on other devices?
We hope everyone's excited for the newly launched Pogoplug Desktop software--which turns your whole computer into your own personal cloud.
There are two flavors of the software available--free, and premium.
- Free: The free version of the software allows you to access your files remotely, share files with others, and essentially allow "infinite" storage for your mobile devices. Download it here.
- Premium: The premium version of the software contains all of the file-sharing and access features of the free version, but also includes video and music streaming to mobile devices, Sony PS3, XBOX 360, and other media devices. It's $29 USD for the digital download version, and $29 plus shipping if you want a physical copy. Download it here.
Give the desktop software a try, and tell the community what you think on our forums! Also make sure to watch the community for our review, coming soon.

So the new free version is now hobbled and does not stream video? The GoFlex Net device advertizes:
FreeAgent? GoFlex? Net Media Sharing Device
Share and access your files anywhere, anytime. Turn your GoFlex ultra-portable and USB drives into Internet-connected storage devices.
- Share your photos, music, and movies over the Internet without uploading
- Access your digital files from any computer on your home network?PC or Mac??and from anywhere in the world
- Listen to your music, watch your movies and access your content from iPhone?, iPad?, Blackberry? or Android? mobile devices*
- Works seamlessly with GoFlex ultra-portable drives and any USB storage device
So, it appears that if you purchase the GoFlex Net device, you automatically get the "Premium" software?
@BeachDude--Pogoplug hardware devices will continue to work as they always have; the limitation is only imposed on Pogoplug "Free" devices, such as another computer in your network that only has the Free software installed.
Example: You have a Pogoplug Video, with a USB drive attached, connected to your network. You can stream content from this Pogoplug to any other remote device through the web client or mobile clients as normal.
You have the desktop software installed on your main computer, without a premium license. You should not be able to stream media from this computer to any other remote device, as that is a limitation of the free software.
Continuing the example, you leave the house with your laptop. You can stream from your Video as always, but you will not be able to stream music/videos from the computer with the free version installed.
Does that make sense? I hope I am explaining it OK!
@JJ--If you're in your own network, you can install the Desktop software on another machine and simply load it up in WMP, QuickTime, etc. and it should play just fine.
To mobile clients or the web browser, it should have to go through the encoding process I would imagine (haven't tested that yet but getting there.) Assuming that is the case, I'm certain encoding would go much quicker using the processor of a main machine as compared to the Pogoplug itself (Video being the exception of course)
Ok, thanks Peter. I was referring to mobile clients and the web. I'll have to try it out when I get the time as well.
JJ said: Do the videos need to be transcoded in the premium version before they can be watched on other devices?
The Premium version transcodes on the fly the first time the video is streamed, like the Pogoplug Video. It then keeps a cached copy of the transcoded file around so it doesn't need to encode again (Again like the Pogoplug Video). Personally I'm somewhat conflicted about that. Sure it doesn't have to transcode again, but it starts wasting disk space.
There's something I'm curious about. Does each computer require it's own purchased copy of Pogoplug Premium or can the same code be used on all of them? What about upgrading to a new machine in the future; does that require a new purchase?
Thanks Morac. I guess I was just trying to determine whether or not I should buy a Pogoplug Video, or if I should just build my own low power rig and install the software on it. I know anything I build will have more processing power than the Pogoplug Video, but if I would have to transcode like with the Pink Pogoplug, then I would just get the Pogoplug Video. So according to your response, I should just build my own box and install the software, yeah?
what happened to the regular pogoplug drive software? i dont want to turn my computer into a pogoplug, i already have one. but i can't find the pogoplug software on the site anymore and the new software uses 4 times as much memory! whats the deal?

I've bought a PogoPlug Pro recently and I've been trying to share some data connected to it with my HDX1000. This device is made to share data isn't it,... but apparently it seems to be SO difficult to do this.
This new software is a second disappointment. I've installed it, tried it for a few hours, and removed it. (back to the previous version)
Has anybody found the added value to upgrade the desktop software ? I hoped to use the more 'user friendly' printer sharing... but it is not working at all. I see a new printer appearing in the 'my printer' folder... So far so good... but I cannot print one single page.... all prints go in a sort of black hole. I see the printdoc appearing in the printer queue, then it changes status to printing, it disapeares and nothing comes out of the printer ...
Sorry to be a little bit negative on this.
Thanks for providing the links to the v2 software. After I installed v3 my P: drive disappeared from Windows Explorer, so I have reinstalled the older version.

I bought the Pogoplug Video on-line less than a week ago, and am having some issues with it. I have DSL wireless at home. Here is a list of my problems:
(1) I put some music files (mp3) and some home video clips (m4) on a usb-drive attached to the Pogoplug Video. When I access these files remotely on my Dell Streak or my Viewsonic g-tablet, a number of things happen. First, I see that I don't have any control in fast-forwarding or going back on my music or video files. My options are limited to turning the music/video on or off.
(2) Sometimes I notice that the USB drive attached to Ppogo doesn't even register on my Dell Streak. I uninstalled and re-installed the software on my Streak several times, but the problem persists. It's a matter of luck!
(3) My Viewsonic tablet cannot download the Pogo software form Android market, even though it has the same Android version as my Streak (both have Android 2.2). I guess that's my tablet's problem.
I'll stop here and wait for some enlightenment on these issues. By the way, I have only the free software.
Thanks.
OK, so, If I go with pogo plug premium, and have 3 external hard drives connected, to my laptop, but then, I turn off my laptop for the night, can I still access my files, then my laptop, is turned off?
So, if I purchase the premium software, instead of the hardware, will I still be able to view my files, from the web client, even though, that my host computer is shut off for the night?
Umm, no.
When you turn off your laptop everything is turned off. You can't access files from something that is not turned on.
Somebody please help...I seem to be caught in an unending loop...
1. I bought a PogoPlug Pro drive, connected it to my router, went through setup, shows up flawlessly. Check.
2. Downloaded the "Desktop Software", installed it, was greeted with a system preferences pane, set it up but saw/found no "Desktop Application". Therefore, upgraded to "Premium" thinking that's why there was no desktop application window.
3. Paid the $29, got my license key, entered into the Preference Pane, it went through flawlessly. However, still don't see any desktop application...it only takes me to an Internet site where I can see my drives.
4. Downloaded the OSX 2.5 version of the software, installed it. Still no desktop application.
Could somebody PLEASE tell me where the Desktop Application is. The PogoPlug icon in my Applications folder only mounts the hard drives attached to my PogoPlug Pro upon launch but does NOT open an desktop application window where I can see all my drives/folders, etc.
5. I'm sure I am missing something really simple, but for the life of me I can't figure it out so could somebody please help?! :-)
Thanks in advance for you advice,
Scdda
New Desktop Software doesn't put the P: drive on my Win7 64-bit laptop anymore. How do I fix this other than reloading older version? Older version didn't properly startup and load P: without a reload and was hoping the new version fixed this.
How do I activate the free desktop software for MAC OS X 10.5? I installed the software, and when I click on the app, it prompts me for an email address and password. If I type one in, it tells me Email/Password incorrect - because I haven't registered a new account or anything yet.
I went to the pogoplug website and couldn't find anywhere to activate or sign up for a new account.
Is the PowerPC version of the software missing a step?
I also have purchased the Premium software, but I can't use it on my PowerPC Mac. When I get the free version up and running, and am satisfied with how it works I'll activate the Premium software. If it doesn't work I'll return it to Best Buy.
@Peter, how long will the old software continue to be supported? This is a legitimate question since the new software only works for Administrator users, not Standard users (type of Windows user account).
If you deprecate or disable the older software, a lot of users are going to be left in the dark.
@Bobman--that's a good question--and I don't know, unfortunately. That would be a question for Pogoplug themselves. If I find anything out, I'll make sure to post here.
I bought the Buffalo CloudStor, and was assuming that streaming would be free? Now I have to buy something. I read your explanation Peter, but it's confusing (more so that multi-variable Calculus).
I can't get things to print either, and streaming video to an Android based smartphone doesn't work - the video become really choppy after 5-7 seconds.
