Just plugged the PogoPlug Video in... yikes ! It's the noise is definitely unacceptable - even at 20 feet away it's loud.

There are several complaints about the noisy fan in the pogoplug video. Is there a plan to address this issue? The fan is so noisy that it should really be called out as a purchasing factor. Personally I would sacrifice the on-the-fly video transcoding to have a quiet device that is always on. I regret selling my pogoplug pro which had a home on my desk and made no noice. The pogoplug video is so loud it's bound to drive you insane if on your desk or close to your work area.
Just got a pogoplug video. Fan noise is totally out of whack and too loud for this product. I thought I got a bad unit until reading similar complaints. Pogoplug what is the plan or recommendation to remedy?
I absolutely love my Pogoplug Video and have not had any problems with it except for the fan noise. Even though I am happy with the device's performance, my wife can't stand the loud fan, and if she can't stand it, my satisfaction does not matter! I may have to return the device just because of the fan and not due to poor performance, which is quite unfortunate since it really seems as if Cloud Engines is really on to something great.
The fan noise is definitely a consideration as to where you locate your PPV. Fortunately for me, I could locate it in my equipment closet directly behind my computer/desk area. I have a cable-passthrough in the sheetrock so that made it easier.
I agree that no one would want to locate this next to their computer because of the noisy fan. Again, IMHO...how did this obvious problem make it to a product that is supposed to be consumer-ready?
Here is the reply that I received from tech support -
"Pogoplug Video uses a very powerful hardware video accelerator chip that requires a fan to make sure that everything stays cool. I'm sorry I don't have a better answer for this"
So I guess the answer is no - there are no plans to reduce the fan noise.
when i asked pogo support, they told fan is not tied to linux and is mechanically separate. if you google fan control and linux, if they are tied, you could switch off fan using linux control. but if it constantly on, it never switches off,
i returned my pogo video and got newer pogoplug p21. it has no fan and is super quiet and awesome for my needs. music streaming. i would have liked video but my main goal is streaming 100 G of music to android and iphone. newer android app is expected in may exactly like iphone as per their support
It is loud enough to annoy non techie people. If you are used to spending days in office labs, server rooms, you probably dont care. If you have kids doing homework in same quiet room as pogoplug video, it is not bearable. i wonderhow pogoplu QA dept works. i am not sure what use case they thought of when releasing the video product. if it is locked away in a basement, no issues. i am in an apt and could not bear it! so even though i got 70 dollar discount from buy.com returned it
It is completely ridiculous how loud this fan is. You can have an xbox turned on, with a disc spinning, and you can hear it over that. I have a oscillating tower fan in my living room, and I can hear the pogoplug over that. They give that same generic answer about the processor needing to be cooled because it is very powerful to be able to stream video and transcode on the go. But that does not explain why they didnt introduce throttling, so when you are not streaming video, the fan is at a lower speed. This thing blasts as soon as it is plugged in, with nothing else even attached. There is no excuse for that. How would you like it if your computer's fan just blasted full speed all the time because you had a powerful processor, instead of changing speeds with processor use, and heat monitoring? Video cards sometimes have a problem with overusing the fan, and a firmware update is released immediately to solve it, but NOT with Pogoplug. I am definitely returning mine!
Here's the techie's lowdown:
The mainboard is essentially identical to that of the Pro and V3, as a matter of cost, redesigning the board to handle the extra power load of the fan directly would have been bit much, considering every step of the manufacturing would need to be altered.
The fan is connected directly to the power input, and blows across the heat sink on the video chip. This small mini-PCIe cannot draw bus power at 12V because the bus is only 3.3V, so powering via the card itself is absolutely out. Monitoring? Since CE didn't design this card, they have no controll over its components, and thus again, neigh absolutely out.
Yes, a 12VDC 0.48A fan is loud but at full bore, that video chip is doing more work that the CPU can do in 3x the time frame, and it's going to need something to disperse that heat.
Future product line revisions (V4, as an example) may change this fact as they may be able to influence, or plan around the facts they have now.
But for now: I'm sorry to say, unless you want it to melt when you start streaming you're non-optimized for $target_device$ video, the fan is required, and there is nothing they can reasonably do to directly monitor the temperature so the fan has to stay on.

I swear the designer of the hardware must be a blonde ditzy chick or someone who got their degree online or from the University of Phoenix.
Pink color? Upside down USB ports? Loud fan? The web interface is a little embarrassing.
This is designed as a desktop device the loud fan is just bad design to keep it in the same formfactor and marketed as a desktop device...........
