I have been trying to use mine for 4 days and cant get videos to play via remote or local. Looks like this thing is halfbaked :( I already have purchased now two Pogoplugs (Pro and Video) no more for me. This is going back in a week if things dont start working.
Categories: Other Pogoplug Enabled Devices
I have PogoPlug Pro and PogoPlug Video. The same .M4V video that was already web optimized by HandBrake, plays terribly from the PogoPlug Video. Extremely choppy video, blochy, and highly pixelated. Plays wonderfully on the PogoPlug Pro.
I have loaded other raw (not optimized video) to the PogoPlug Video with the same results. I adjusted the Media settings of the PogoPlug Video to the same as the PogoPlug Pro...no change.
Am I doing something wrong here? I was expected something even better than the Pro model...this is awful.
Is the fan on yours noisy?
Unlike other models, The Video has a fan which puts off quite a bit of noise I think.
Yes, the fan is more than a little noisy and it does not appear to be able to slow down to a quieter mode when processor load is reduced. It just runs full power all the time. You probably would not want to have the PogoPlug Video sitting on your desk where you work. It is definitely louder than any desktop PC fan I've ever heard.
I would be happy with the fan noise if the video playback was as good as my PogoPlug Pro's is. At the moment, the PogoPlug Video may be a step backwards. I've submitted a tech support request for the video playback quality issue and am awaiting a response.
If you want to see the video playback problem I started this thread with:
PogoPlug Video:
http://my.pogoplug.com/share/w9QJAjGICy2Aip9Rn3I0SA
The above is a video clip optimized with Handbrake and copied to PP video.
PogoPlug Pro:
http://my.pogoplug.com/share/YukLD7oGj3fHPVI5IHNbJQ
Same video but streamed from PP Pro.
That is sad. I just received my Pogoplug Video but I haven't plugged it in yet because no instructions came with it. It tells me to go to my.pogoplug.com but when I get there, it asks me for a Premium License Code before I can download software. I have no idea where to get this code because it didn't come with one.
The fan noise problem is also troubling. Plus the inability to stream. I do hope they can get this all taken care of soon.

I was testing some other things out and noticed an issue with the website not the Pgoplug video on something I was testing.
Can you try http://dockstar.pogoplug.com/share/eMSnShkxaRN7RK9sI3vUXQ/ It uses the old web format.

That is my experience also. So it's not the Pogoplug Video but the website itself.
I have sent an email to support to get their take.

That's encouraging...may be they can put a priority on it for a fix. Not a good way to launch a new product though.
This garbage is getting returned tomorrow. Why release something that doesn't work at all? Done wasting time with this.
goconfigure said: What were the handbrake settings you used, Gary?
The Handbrake settings were very straightforward:
Presets: iPhone & iPod Touch
Output Settings: Place check mark in "Web Optimized"
That's it.
If you encode multiple videos at the same time (queue), make sure the settings remain the same for every video file.
Please let me know as soon as possible when these issues are fixed, since I am experiencing exactly the same problems - playback for 5 seconds, choppy video, grainy, watery, jittery, etc. stop and go, breaking up into jigsaw puzzle pieces, freezing, etc. I will be greatly relieved if its is only a website issue, since I really want to support these guys all the way. If the situation is hopeless, I will return the Video model and get the Pro instead, especially the one embedded in the Buffalo Cloudstor 2 TB drive. As things stand now, the output coming out of the Video is no different from the one from my old cheapo Seagate Dockstar device, and a lot worse than my 2 dollar Air Video program for my iPad. I even tried downloading live YouTube videos into it and after a few minutes it started giving me a "100% disk overload" message. Never happened before. Another thing is that when I activated my new device, the acknowlegement said that my Pogoplug Pro is now activated. Strange, since what I bought was a Pogoplug Video, not a Pogoplug Pro. Maybe the theory that the Video has a completely different firmware/hardware combo is mistaken. Whatever it is, let's pray that they will somehow manage to fix all these startup problems. I am giving them the full benefit of the doubt. After all, this is what America is all about - innovation, risk-taking, balls, etc. Plus these guys have thousands of happy Japanese users, so maybe the fault is with us Yankees for being so picky. Cheers,
Fil
Filibogado,
I too hope that this issue can be resolved quickly. I received an email from their tech support this morning saying that an update may be coming out this Tuesday (subject to successful testing).
Having worked in a large corporation for many years and been involved in the roll out of major software systems, I still have to ask how did this problem make it through their product testing and review as the problem is so obvious?? This is not some little pesky quirk that happens once in a blue moon. As I said in a previous post, this is not a good way to introduce a new product.
I also noted, as you did, the registration message mentioning a PogoPlug Pro instead of a PogoPlug Video. Again...how would something so obvious get through ANY product testing and review with problems and errors being so noticeable?? Troubling to me as a consumer and fan of PogoPlug.
I was very excited to get my new pogoplug Video after its announcement at CES. However this has been tempered with video playback issues & problems AND an unacceptably NOISY fan! Pictures and Music sharing/display are just fine, BUT I mainly purchased this pogoplug Video device for the video streaming/sharing functionality.
Noting these issues:
- Unacceptably NOISY fan.!
- Extremely poor video playback quality [ http://my.pogoplug.com/share/GmG5KnyLKBjoJiYRMnmiIA/ ] [download file to see quality as played on PC] -pixelated, pause/play, synching, etc..
- NO progress bar displayed during video playback.
- [this one is a BIG issue] - Once I accessed the video files on my Moto DROID phone thru pogoplug app, they no longer play [even with the poor quality] thru my IE browser NOR do they play again on my android pogoplug App. To correct, I have to power cycle the pogoplug Video unit. If videos in above link to not play - just means I need to power cycle the unit again... BUT you can still download the video's...
I am hopeful pogoplug will address and correct these issues as I am excited about the potential for this device.
It seems that the POGOPLUG server license is the way to go. $29.99 and no noisy fan and setup headaches. Just activate the license on your PC/Mac and go. I think my PC could handle the transcoding on the fly better than the PPV could anyway. It goes back today. Pogo-unplugged :)
I have great hopes for next weeks firmware release UPDATE.. Setup was a breeze.. This product has great potential..

Me too, and no later than Tuesday, please. I'm leaving on an Asian tour and was hoping to test video streaming from hotel browsers in places like Bangkok, Hongkong, Manila and Beijing., with the Pogoplug Video sitting in Washington, halfwat around the world. Buy.com has a 45-day return policy and if things don't turn out right, I still have a few days under the wire to return it. Attaboy, Pogoplug... I'm rooting for you!

I got the Pogoplug UPDATE pushed to me last night.. My videos now play perfectly. Thanks Pogoplug! Great work, great job..! I now love this device, sans the noisy fan..
tnangler,
I don't have the update yet...hoping it comes down shortly. Thanks for the update.
According to their tech support, the update should show something higher than 2.9.5.3.
I got the update overnight and it is awesome - I wish they had installed it when the Pogoplug Video first went on sale - that could have saved a lot of moaning and groaning and gnashing of teeth. I've decided to keep the Pogoplug Video. I now have a new-found respect for the Pogoplug development team.
The so-called noisy fan doesn't bother me - I put the Pogoplug Video on my wife's desk and she takes off her hearing aid when she's using her PC so she doesn't notice the whirring noise (LOL). I'm not expecting perfection from a <$200 toy.
Kudos to Christopher Louie and the fellow who goes by the name "Pogoplugged" on Twitter. I am going to spread the good word.

The noisy fan should be able to be turned off with a firmware update too, right?
why does it need a fan with no disk and just a cpu all the time? when temp>x then they can turn on the fan. can we open and rip the fan out.
do you guys have problems with streaming audio service? i mean the listing by alphabetical instead of track #
It appears I'm not out of the woods yet on this problem. Firmware version 3.0.0 self-installed this morning. As of now I cannot view ANY video on the Pogoplug Video. The storage device attached is a flashdrive.
I've ejected then unplugged the Pogoplug Video then powered it back up. No change.
I've sent an email to tech support a few minutes ago.
Does any body still have any video samples up of how good the pogoplug video is. I can't find a share that is still working. If the update is as good as people are saying I just might have to order one.
Well, my updated Pogoplug Video finally started playing video tonight. It does stream video very quickly. I used some "right out of the camera" video (MP4) to test it. The Flip Mino Video played well BUT having looked at several video formats, I'm not totally convinced that the quality is as good as the same video when viewed on my Pogoplug Pro. The playback on the Pogoplug Video seems a bit fuzzy and still a bit pixelated.
May be it's my eyes...I'm going to keep working with it.
Naw...it's not my eyes. Even my wife says the video is blurry.
Also the same video when viewed on the Pro is a bigger size. When viewed on the Pogoplug Video it is a smaller image size.
The Pogoplug Video ain't right yet!
I made a screencast movie of watching the same video file on the Pro then the Pogoplug Video. Look at the image sharpness and image size differences. The Pro does it better.
http://www.screencast.com/users/gsownsby/folders/Jing/media/b8ce1fd6-7c12-427...
Though my screenshot movie does not do the problem full justice, the Pro is definitely better.
Here at home, I'm on a gigabit network with a 50 mbs fiber Internet connection so pixelation and distortion should not be a problem.
NEWS FLASH...
If you turn off all the optimization settings under Media Settings (local and remote), the video quality vastly IMPROVES and the image size is larger.
Doing that would seem to be counter productive but it does work. I'm a happy camper now.
