Version 4.0 of the Pogoplug app for the iPhone/iPod touch breaks compatibility with the iPad. On a first generation iPad running the latest version of iOS all you get after you launch the app is a blank white screen (the standard "splash" screen is shown for a fraction of a second and then the entire screen turns white). This has also been reported by several other users on the iTunes Store feedback for the Pogoplug v4.0 app.
This is an unfortunate development since the previous version of the Pogoplug app worked pretty well on the iPad and in fact was in some respects preferable over the Pogoplug HD app even when running on the iPad.

Just installed the new Pogoplug App for iPhone 4. This looks good, and the display rate of folders is much improved over the previous version.
I have not tried streaming video yet as I do not have anything fully transcoded. Will investigate that soon.
Viewing of pictures is a little buggy. I have some Dilbert strips on my plug. These images are basically widescreen. When viewing these images, the centre box of the strip is the main viewing area. You cannot resize the image with multi-touch to view the whole cartoon strip.
And, as with the previous app, when uploading images, it appears to increase the photo size. My test image went from 1.4Mb to 2.5Mb. Also some of the exif headers are stripped out of it. Namely the
Date Taken, Camera information, Advanced photo Information, GPS information. The loss of GPS information and the increase of image size would prevent me from using this app for uploading photo's.
Cheers,
Coldfinish,
It is painfully obvious now that no one at Cloud Engine tested the product fully on all platforms before release. The app simply does not work on iPad and I know of 5 people with the app and none of them are working. Whats worse, is they seem to have completely forgotten the PogoplugHD app that was originally for the iPad and released only the iPhone version and tagged it as (iPad compatible).

I don't mean to be harsh, but I would assume that this is so COLDFINISH. If they had completely abandoned the HD app then they should of announced it and taken the backlash. This release seems more like imcompitence on CloudEngines part. I am a developer myself and I make damm sure that any release, update, improvements, etc.. work on all platforms that are supported before releasing it. Further more, by now they should know something is wrong with the app and should of released some sort of blog post or press release stating what they are doing about it. Even if it just an aknowlegement would be something. That is what I would do. I have submitted two seperate support tickents on the subject and it is now been 3 days with no answer.
I submitted a trouble ticket on this issue. I have been told that the new iPhone app will be corrected to work on the iPad. The iPad app will be released later in 2011.
I did get a quick response to my questions (less then a day).

I'm glad they responded to you so quickly but apparently they decieded to ignore me. As for your response, please clarify a few things:
1. "The iPad app will be released later in 2011", is that something they told you directly? if so,
2. What does that mean exactly? Later this year? fiscal 2011?
3. If it is going to take that long to fix, then why was this release done under false pretense? Why break the functionality of the previously working PogoplugHD version 3? I happen to have an iPhone but I know several folks who don't and they used the iPad to gain access. Now they can't.
In response to above questions:
1. I was told specifically from my support ticket - "in regards to PogoplugHD, we are already working on new version. The new version for iPad is scheduled later on 2011"
2. I did not ask if 2011 was fiscal 2011 or calendar year 2011.
3. I did not ask them why this happened this way.
I was told the corrected iPhone app that would work on the iPad would be released in a week or so.
If breaking the iPad app was done with full knowledge in advance, I would agree that this was a poor decision. If they did not know that the upgrade would break the iPad app in advance, then it would appear that their testing procedures are not very good. Ether way, I would see this as poor customer service. I would also have liked to see some more official communication on the problems that have been created and any work arounds available.
This afternoon, Wednesday April 6, 2011, things are working again.
The new white background web interface is different, in the long run it looks more professional and I'm finding it pretty easy to navigate.
I like the ability to see what is shared by E-mail address so I can see instantly what I'm sharing with some individual.
Looking good, much better than over the weekend when things were in a state of flux.
w/o iPad compatibility I might as well turn off the pogoplug and save the electricity- the app DOES NOT work on my iPad2 (ios 4.3.1)as of this morning April 7 1300UCT it doesn't work for me.
thanks for the update pogoplug

I agree with "If breaking the iPad app was done with full knowledge in advance" was a poor condition. But, it is also possible they knew this was going to be a problem and either couldn't do anything about it or were willing to go ahead and sacrifice their customer base that used the product. I guess I would personally feel better about it if they were just upfront or honest. But then again, my take is they had NO idea this was going to happen and where completely surprised by this event. Someone screwed up by not properly testing the release on all platforms. Once it was released, they couldn't take it back because they had no FIX at all for it. That makes more sense in light of their reaction to the problem by issuing vague and canned promises. Why should we be happy with running the iPhone version of the app on an iPad? They could of easily left v3 on the table for iPad and promised v4 for the iPad down the line, keeping both versions for the different platforms. but v3 doesnt work anymore on the iPad either because the backend systems have changed in some way. They cant go back, its too late. In all of this I'm stuck with only using the web version to view my files. Its not just bad customer service, its bad development, bad marketing, and bad Q&A.

then they shouldn't have labelled it as a universal app
as a registered ios developer (albeit not a very experienced one) the build versions in xcode allow you to build as iphone only- ipad only and universal
not having reversed engineered the app and having no information regarding this specific process- i can only guess they blew it when compiling it and/or labelling it as an universal app either way it is inexcusable
I downloaded the updated iPhone app. While it works, you cannot stream any video from your Pogoplug to your iPad. Interestingly enough, the exact same video will stream to my iPhone 4. I do not understand why that would be true. Oh well, at least I have some functionality back on the iPad.
I can stream from my pogoplug using my windows computer to read from the NAS pogoplug device, and stream (with on-the-fly transcoding) using airvideo server. The Airvideo app costs about $3, but it's very good, and you can use Airvideo to create transcoded video on your windows or apple computer, and then use the automatic copy to stick that video back on the pogoplug drive and access the file with airvideo server pointing to the pogoplug nas drive.
It's like a weird C++ program with pointers to pointers to arrays of pointers to objects, etc. But if you follow carefully, it works. Implementation is left to the reader as an exercise with a potentially useful result.
Or wait for the pogoplug device with the built-in transcoding hardware chipset and forget about transcoding issues, let it happen on-the-fly in hardware.

It also doesn't work on the iPhone without the latest OS, which will break my Cydia app and programs I use from there (not from Apple).
I think they'll fix all this, so far they're fixing other issues, and as a former software developer I know how frustrating it can be to deal with a moving target hardware platform over which you have no control (namely the changes to apple OS).
I use my pogoplug for file sharing and photo sharing, and the music and video sharing works fine computer to computer.
I'm sure they'll fix it, but hopefully sooner rather than later.
I have an iPhone 3GS with OS V 4.3.1
Pogoplug was working fine UNTIL I updated to V 4.0. I'm able to sign-in and get to the menu screen but when I click on Settings all I get is "Indexing" in Music Library. I kept that running but nothing's changed. If I click on Files all I get is the swirl going round and round with "Loading..."
I've updated to V4.1 and it's still the same and hasn't fixed the issue.
I've submitted a report via the app and would greatly appreciate if anyone else can give me a heads-up to a fix so I can use the app as intended.
