Under settings -> Media settings You can adjust the quality you want to see your images on LAN by toggling the first checkbox: "Preview photos at full resolution when browsing on your local network (full screen)"
This only works for fullscreen mode I guess.
The previews for me are of acceptable quality but for fullscreen watching this option is really important to keep always on, especially if you have a large LCD monitor.
On clicking on a photo thumbnail in the web interface, a "slideshow" setup is proposed.
In this slideshow the images resolution is very poor. It's like if the software somehow generated a light weight version of each image for web display, with a reduced quality and size. If I reduce the size of the browser window, the quality becomes acceptable, but still borderline.
