I recognise these as the same invisible files placed at the root of external hard drives connected to the pogoplug devise.
I learnt to delete these files to get rid of the preview files generated by the 'Media Settings' - 'Optimize your videos for playback' which is on by default and creates a problem viewing more than 10 seconds of your video files
So I'd say these files were the 'indexing data' for the pogoplug system, and they will be continually recreated whilst you use the pogoplug system, so its not worth deleting them over and over, you will get annoyed
After downloading the new beta software and setting it up I now see two new hidden items on my destop:
The first is a folder labeled .cedata.
The second is a file labeled .ceid
I always show hidden items as the system admin. What happens if I move these? Why are they placed on the desktop instead of inside a program data file or other installation location?
If you have your desktop connected to the Pogoplug service through "remote access" (Check in preferences of your Pogoplug drive software). Then all items on your desktop are being indexed and thumbnails will be created of pictures on your desktop.
In .cedata the thumbnails are kept for the web UI. And in the .ceid file some preferences are being saved. For example if you are sharing files through Facebook etc.
If you move these they will simply be created again automatically in the same location. You could see them as something similar as a thumbs.db file in Windows.
I understand they might annoy you, I also don't like a cluttered desktop. What you can do is just remove the path to your desktop from the "remote access" list under preferences of the drive software and then remove the two files.
Note that if you remove the Desktop (or any folder) from Remote Access, that folder will no longer be enabled for Remote Access, and you will not be able to access it from the Web UI or share files and folders from it.
There has got to be a better way to allow remote access of a system folder than putting hidden files/folders into the root of that same folder, especially the desktop!! That goes against all standard programming practices and procedures. That is what the "Appdata" folder in each individual user area in Windows is for or better yet the general "Program Data" folder. Place icons and any other necessary data for a shared folder in an appropriately named folder under a special Pogoplug appdata area, NOT in the root of the folder itself, PLEASE! I have turned off remote sharing of my desktop because of this improperly programmed feature. Fortunately the presence of these hidden "dot" files/folders in music, videos, pictures, and documents is not as obvious nor annoying as it is on a desktop, but it is still not good nor correct.
