I understand that pogoplug detects whether your device (pc etc) is on the same local LAN as the pogoplug. If so, it routes data directly between devices over the local LAN using up to Gigabit speed, hence this is faster.
If your PC and pogoplug are remote from each other, i.e. not on the same LAN, then they communicate via pogoplug servers and the speed is governed my the speed of your internet connection. This is much slower for most users! The upload speed for most ISP's is also much slower than the download speed.
The web browser is used for these actions and can have either a http or https connection depending on the URL you use. HTTPS is slower due to the need to encrypt the data stream. Unless the data is especially sensitive http is recommended.
