Is there any way of bringing back the old way of active copy for the beta software? Right now I do not feel comfortable in having my entire PC in the cloud, and I just want to have the ability to copy from a local folder on my PC to the hard drive attached to my pogoplug automatically. Is this still possible with the beta software?

Exactly the same problem here. The active copy button in the app preferences sends me to the web account, and there I cannot set a Mac folder as source folder for an active copy. So is "local" active copy lost in this version? If so, I plan to revert back to the old software until this is added back.

Add me to the list that wants/needs to be able to copy FROM a local folder to my pogoplug connected drive. Even with my computer in the cloud, Active Copy does not show those folders in the Active Copy webpage - not any option to select the computer - only the pogoplug connected drive. (On my imac)

The ability to set Active Copy to only run locally again would also be much appreciated. I don't want to sync all of my things over the internet, but only when I'm at home via LAN (to save my bandwidth).

Actually I can now set the active copy from my mac to the pogoplug, on the web interface. I should say I still would love to be able to set up a "local only" active copy, in order to be able to sync things without having my mac online (by online I mean accessible in the pogoplug web interface).

In relation to Nolan's post, I have a question: is the active copy sync now done throught the internet, or is it done via LAN?

March 20, 2011 5:21 PM

I've not tried the active copy off the LAN. If it does the sync on a slow connection it could be a really "bad" problem. Sometimes we have to deal with 56kb dial - I think you know what I would mumble if the sync started while on that connection and I am trying to get something important done. The SYNC should be by default LAN only with the option to "give it a try" when out and about traveling.

Personally, I am not really sold on using Active Copy when off the LAN with the vendors using the "up to XXXmb" speeds that are mostly really slow during the business hours.

Give me the choice. The choice I would want to be default is "Active Copy only on LAN" with an option to see if it works when out and about.

Agree with all these comments. i am disappointed that the ability to active copy from the laptop to the hard drive does not appear to be availible on the beta version of the software.

I can imagine it's confusing if the workflow has changed for someone but I don't see any difference in the end results.

Instead of selecting folders for active copy in the drive software you enable remote access to those folders and from the web interface you enable active copy to copy their contents to your Pogoplug.

You might say I don't need my computer to be in the cloud. But it kind of already was if you used active copy. And now you will be able to copy also in the opposite direction! This is a feature that looks like a big improvement to me!

I'm even hoping Cloud Enginenes will in the future change active copy into active sync! So that you can keep a folder on your computer in sync (both directions) with a folder on your Pogoplug.

A sync option would be GREAT. I see the current setup as a limitation, in that if I move a file from a folder to another in the mac, it will end up duplicated in the pogoplug. I would love a pure sync option, where files can be deleted from the target folder, as well as added.

I can't even see my local folders on my PC to start an Archive copy.

Plus, for the record, my PogoPlug is not showing up as a drive letter.

And I can't install the Beta on two different machines to see how the cloud thing works.

I am ready to ditch this beta and go back to the old way that actually works.

@Bing987 you can request a second key by going to: http://beta.pogoplug.com/betainvite/ and submitting again with another email address. You will get a second key for the other computer. When you have your drive software installed you can sign in to your current account. It worked for me.

Looks to me like the beta software is not correctly installed on your PC. I would suggest to download it again and reinstall. http://beta.pogoplug.com/view.html?promptsoft=1

Hope you get it to work.

There is an incidious side to ACTIVE COPY I learned the hard way when I logged into my Pogoplug world from another computer with active copy enabled but not restricted to only the LAN. Up until this time, active copy was set to start upon connection from the desktop application.

I needed to access one of my Pogoplugs and had to borrow another computer. To make an embarrasing story short, I did it the lazy way and used active copy to collect the files from My Video. Then the moment of, "Oops," I got more than just my files.

I have learned that "automatic" Active copy to sync files has to be watched carefully if away from one's "safe" LAN!

My point? Sync is good, BUT do two things: 1) make it optional; and 2) ask if the file is really supposed to be transferred.

Uninstalling the beta...

I tried and it still won't work properly.

I need to use my drives so my only choice is to uninstall the beta.

So- question then. I set up an active copy that copies from My Music (on my PC, which appears on the web interface) to My Music on my external drive connected to my Pogoplug. Since it's "copy" and not "sync" does that mean it'll only copy what I add to it after? There's a folder in My Music on my PC, and it didn't get copied to My Music on the Pogoplug drive after I set up the active copy, and it says it's up to date.

So is there now no way for me to copy the contents of a PC folder to a Pogoplug drive if the files are already currently there? That worked with the old software and active sync, didn't it?

March 29, 2011 7:45 AM

I am finding the Active Sync (or Backup as it appears now?) to be painfully slow in copying new files over to the pogoplug drive - but worse, it seems to totally ignore random files and/or folders - yest states that it is "up to date"

Hope these issues are fixed quickly.

I am having the same problems since I do not want to have my computer on the cloud and only active copy some folders to the pogo drive to be accessed. The new backup does not allow me that ability. and I also wanted it only to sync on internal net not internet. TOOOOOOO slow.

At this point I am going back to the older version NEW is not BETTER!!!!

Has the new version been fixed to allow desktop source to target pogo just like the old version? I was thinking of updating.

I have never been able to get Active Copy to select a drive / folder on my PC to be the SOURCE and the DESTINATION to be a PogoPlug drive / folder.
I have setup the drives / folders for remote access using the Pogoplug PC software. I then use the Web browser Pogoplug software to set up Active Copy. The only choice for Active Copy SOURCE is drive / folder from the PogoPlug drive no access is available to use any of the PC drive / folder previously setup. Has anyone successfully used PogoPlug with PC drive / folder to be the SOURCE

I have reported this as a trouble ticket (#43931) to PogoPlug. Support has made many suggest but none of their suggestions work.

Does anyone know if this feature works at all?

I have a question on Active Copy. My Mac is pushing its Documents contents up to a Pogoplug "Docs" directory, but if I put something from my PC into that Pogoplug directory, its not being "Synced" to the Mac. Its not copied down.

Is this by design or is it a bug?

Thanks in advance for the help!

The active copy basically only goes one way.
If you put a file on your Mac that is not on your Pogoplug hard drive it will be copied over. If you put a file on your Pogoplug hard drive, from another source, it will not be copied to your Mac.

Active Copy is not a true sync program. If you need to sync between multiple devices you may want to use a 3rd party sync app and the Pogoplug drive program.

In the new PC version the active copy is not really active, has bugs, sometimes it copies over to the pogo drive and other times it does not and has to be re started. I'm thinking of going back to the old version which worked perfectly.

Cool thanks guys for answering. I observed the 1-way sync behavior and just wanted to verify that is how it was designed.

Lungs- thats why it is Betta, they have fixed it so You can see...

My older version is working fine and don't have time to be a test pig. With the older version you don't have to tell it to sync with folders on your desktop which opens up to the cloud. You can just choose what you want to back up. Problem with updates is that they try to get to fancy rather than improves what works.
