Hi whisper, great questions.
1. Your computer does need to be on and active for the desktop software to work. I think if your computer goes to sleep, it may not work--and it definitely won't work if your computer is turned off. (This is one advantage inherent with the dedicated Pogoplug in that it is an always-on, separate device.)
2. Does the desktop app render Active Copy obsolete--not really, but I see what you mean. In order to access the files remotely, you would no longer need to use Active Copy because they are already on your desktop, which is now shared.
However, Active Copy can still serve as a way for you to create a redundant backup of those files, even if you're only accessing them from the desktop share.
This may be a silly question, but I am new to the beta software and have been slightly confused on the difference between remote access and active copy.
I set up several folders on my home computer for remote access. Will these folders be accessible from my PPP, at all times, even if my computer is turned off, in sleep mode, etc.? Or is it simply a way to access these files remotely provided my home computer is powered up and awake?
If accessible at all times, would this make obsolete the need to enable active copy? Prior to installing beta I had several folders that would sync to my PPP via active copy. Do I still need to do this or will the files simply be redundant to the ones that are now set up using remote access?
I hope this makes sense. Thanks for any help.
Here might be another rendition? Active copy allows unattended distribution/update of files residing on one plug to one or more other pogo enabled devices. Remote access allows one to get at files that have been put somewhere but does not automatically distribute or update other copies of the file that reside on other pogo enabled devices.
When I travel, I use remote access. I expect Active copy to move my files that I have changed modified or added to other places that I have designated with Active Copy.
The BETA software offers another choice where one "current use" computer can immediately "fan" out to many recipients in "full" duplex while I am traveling. It is a different method of handling the need for distribution that does it where I am and not wait for when I can upload to a pogoplug back in the office.
