In addition to the above scenario, I have some source code -- e.g., .py files, that I would also like to preview before downloading... it would be nice if there were some "standard" previewers (e.g., image, text, etc) that each user could associate with different file types...

The Pogoplug http://my.pogoplug.com/share/ website is so smart that if you share
an .xls file it can show you (with preview, the magnifying glass with the + in it)
what the spreadsheet inside that file looks like.
Yet, the pogoplug website is so stupid that it shows it as an image... meaning
you cannot copy/paste any of the cells of your spreadsheet!
Same with a .txt file.
I thought surely they must have a LIST of what extensions the website previews
and how it treats them. But when I asked, they said no, they had no such list!
Am I the only one interested? Here is what I have so far:
Ext Preview shows..
.jpg Image
.txt Image that looks like text (cannot copy/ paste lines or fields)
.xls Image that looks like spreadsheet (cannot copy/paste contents of individual cells)
.htm Image (links are highlighted in blue...but you cannot click
on them since the whole page is one image)
.bin [no preview offered] (can’t really complain about this I suppose)
.exe [no preview offered] (ditto)
On the .txt and .htm files, I keep asking myself what is the point of
converting them to an image? Isn’t this actually more work than
serving them as plain text? Is it just laziness, or is there some
SINGULAR SINISTER ATTITUDE OF MIND that motivates this
behavior? May I have a clue please?
(And I know that I can “always” download the whole file and then open it on
my PC if I want to pick out a cell or click on a link or whatever).
Thanks!
