It probably depends on your local setup. If your drive is connected via USB and the local network is wired, it should work okay either way. If your drive is hooked but faster than USB2 (USB3 or eSATA) or wireless on the pro version, then backups will be much quicker from PC direct to the hard drive. I have a pro and only wireless g, so I backup to a directly connected PC eSATA port instead of USB, and then later back up the backup to a pogoplug drive for double redundancy. Drive letters can also be a little less stable on the pogopolug and could cause it not to run if the pogoplug desktop app stops working.
I think even on a wired network, backup will be a bit slower to the pogoplug drive than direct to a USB since it has to convert the backup data to Ethernet then back to USB protocol along the way. If done in off times it probably won't matter, but I prefer backups to complete quickly.

I just purchased a PogoPlug and want to know whether I should buy a new USB drive or use the one I currently have for back up. I would like to use the one I know have that already has my back-up folders on it that I copy to for back-up.
I have an N network with three computers attached and back-up music, photos, files, favorites, and downloads to portable USB drives on regular basis. So if that's the case then I should maintain my current portable USB for back up, hooking it direct to the PC when I want to back up and use another blank drive for the Pogo, puting music and photos on the cloud as needed. I'm assuming that I can copy to the Pogo and do not have to move photos/music etc. From what I've read on the forum the Pogo's speed limits its usage for backup, but I've found the same feedback to be the case for most of the current NAS devices available on the market. Thanks for the response!
