So I recently stumbbled upon pogoplug and have to say I'm very intrigued.  I have been looking for a way to share music/movies with my friends across the country and this could be a way to do that and so much more.

A few questions come to mind (I'm sorry, I'm not the most techy person so these could be quite silly questions).

1.  I have a 2TB hard-drive which I have hooked up to my non-internet compatible TV (but it can play AVI files).  If I hook my hard drive with all my movies into the pogoplug, is there anyway for a non-network compatible TV to access them? (is there a USB out jack?!)  Or would have to get a PS3 or some sort of  network compatible item to be the middle man?

2.  I've been reading in the forums that the pogoplug is not compatible with hard drives that are formatted for a mac, but I also read this was going to be updated via firmware... has this happened yet?

3. I don't know if I'm allowed to say it, but I was also looking at Tonido.  I downloaded their software the other night and learned that my friends can't download full folders, only individual files... is this the same situation with pogoplug? Or can shared users (over the web) download full folders?

Last one...

4.  Given I have a ton of digital movies, I am interested in the upcoming pogoplug video... but it's not on your comparison chart. I assume it has all the features of the standard pogoplug and is made to better allow for streaming videos? Yes?  Any other features? Mutliple users? Wi-Fi?

Your feedback is appreciated.

Thanks.

I'm happy to help with your questions, they're great. Don't worry about being non-techie, Pogoplug is designed to be very easy to work with.

1. No USB out jack from the Pogoplug; it's designed to work over the Internet. The PS3 is a possibility. You could connect the PS3 to your local network, on which the Pogoplug will also be connected, and your Pogoplug can share media to the PS3--it's specifically designed with uPnP compatibility to PS3 and XBOX 360.

2. Mac formatted hard drives are definitely supported. A long while back it had issues with HFS+ Journaled format, but that's been fixed for a long time.

3. Of course you're allowed to say it :) Tonido is a very different product though, and to be honest, I've never used one. One way or another, the Pogoplug does allow you to share individual files OR folders, whichever you please.

4. You don't see it on the chart? I updated it a short while back.

The Pogoplug Video is basically a regular Pogoplug with advanced video processing features--that is, it doesn't incorporate the features of the Biz, nor does it have onboard WiFi.

What it does have is capability to transcode videos on-the-fly for streaming through a browser--no pre-transcoding required.

Thanks for your quick reply.

A few other questions come to mind... I did a few quick searches but didn't find any similar questions...

1. I know the Biz has a bunch of features for multiple users... but do the standard/pro (or even the biz) allow multiple users to access the attached drives are the same time, or is access limited to just one at a time? ie- if a buddy signs onto a shared folder and starts to download a large movie file, will I be able to have access to an important work document? Or would I have to wait until he completes his download?

2. I imagine this is likely, but I just want to be sure... there is plenty written about the capability to share files with others via the web. But can others have write/add permissions as well? Say I share a album with my friend and they have their own pictures from the same event... can they upload/add pictures to that same folder? Could I create "Bob's thesis folder" and allow only Bob to edit/upload to that folder but other people to access it?

3. Just wanted to make sure I got this one right... in order to use the wi-fi feature of the pro, it first has to be plugged into the router, correct? My network is made up entirely of Airport expresses, which have no ethernet out capability, so I would need a new (or borrow) a wireless router to utilize the wireless capability.

That's all for now. Thanks for your response.

1. All pogoplugs allow you to give multiple people access to specific folders and files. multiple users can access at the same time from what I can tell.

2. You can share any folder or file with as many people as you want. They only have access to the files or folders you give them access, not the whole drive. You can give them view/download only access or access to upload files as well. If you give user2 upload access, then user3 would have their same rights on files in the shared folder. I don't think users ever get the right to delete or move files except maybe in the biz version. I think what the biz adds is giving the admin type access where they could actually manage shares in their part of the drive or create folders and re-share, and maybe delete or rename.

3. The pro does have to be plugged in initially to register. It might do some other setup function as well before wireless is enabled. Someone else may be able to help you on this question.
