I've been ripping some DVDs and compressing/encoding them to H.264 (m4v) via handbrake (0.9.5).  I have my dockstar with a 1TB HD attached on my network with my Xbox wired to the same router.  Here is the paradox: I am able to play all of my older avi videos on the xbox with no problems, but I cannot play these on the Web UI or my ipod (pogoplug app).  Conversely, all of the newer dvd rips that I've been making as m4vs, using a tweaked version of the "high profile" pre-set, are playable on the webUI and ipod, but not on the Xbox.

I have actually made five short clips (chapters 1-5) using handbrake to fiddle with the audio codec settings.  Of the 5, all will play with VLC on my mac, all will play on the webUI, 3 will play fully on the ipod (the other two have no audio), the same 3 will play on the Xbox (oddly, my other m4vs won't play - too big??).  The 2 that don't play with audio on the ipod or at all on the xbox have MP3 audio.

I am currently encoding a range of sizes (+5 chapter difference between each) at the moment to rule out or prove a size issue.

I have text files of the codec analysis for all 5 that I can post if anyone wants to see them.

I will post what comes of the different sized clips.

Also, is there anyway to get the folders on the pogoplug to be respected on the xbox? Currently, all I get is "local videos" and Shared with me. Within local videos, videos are listed by name, despite the selection of the option to 'list by type' on the xbox. Files are well organized on the harddrive, and that is seen on the webUI and ipod app as well.

To see the folder structure on the Xbox you have to go one the pogo web page and share the hard drives you want to see with your self( your email) you then access it on the Xbox through the shared with me folder. As for m4v , I've found the Xbox only likes when you include only one audio track and it is Aac. Try encoding only including one audio track and it should work, if u want multiple audio tracks you could use media center. Write back here if u need more help

Thanks for the reply. I actually figured out how to get it to stream on the xbox (I used the High Profile setting to start with). Interestingly, even the files that had 2 audio streams (the second was AC3 passthrough) still worked, though I went with only one audio stream since the file size was about 2/3 as much. One setting that I noticed was different between the high profile (which worked) and the apple TV (which didn't work) was the CABAC setting, not sure if it was significant or not, though.

I will try the sharing to get the file structure to work, I assume that it just needs to be shared with the email address associated with the account?

Yes you just share the folders with your own email address them go to shared with me on the Xbox. I've recently been trying to encode alot of my stuff with handbrake to make it Xbox and iPhone 4 compatible. When I said one audio track I really meant only one Aac audio track. The ac3 track is just passed through from the original source to save the 5.1 but neither my iPhone or Xbox can access it. Files with both one Aac and one ac3 will play fine it's just when u have two Aac tracks( 1 English track,2 directors commentary, etc) the file will no longer play on the Xbox dashboard. Are you using windows or a Mac? I'm using windows. I use handbrake to encode then tag & rename to tag the m4v and apply cover art. I also use mp4 toolbox to strip out the second Aac track for files that already have it without having to re encode.

I am using a mac (could use windows if I need to). I've been having pretty good luck with this now. I dropped the 5.1 audio to save space, and since I don't have a sound system, I don't really care right now. My recent m4v videos have successfully played on the webUI, my ipod, and my xbox. Subtitles (burned in, forced only) for foreign scenes and films have been working as well.

Thanks on the folder suggestion, I set myself up on the shared list, and will try on the xbox when I get home.
