Transcoding a file puts it in a format that your device will understand. In order to stream it to a computer over the internet, the file needs to be in a format that the "sending" device understands. This is why the device has the transcoding function.

I have a Segate GoFlex Net, a Seagate HardDrive, and the PogoPlug software to complete my total streaming package. My question is if I only plan on watching the videos when I am at a friends house or if I share with a family memeber out of state do I need to transcode ? Note we do not plan on watching the videos from a mobile device, only from a PC.
I am trying to figure out why the transcode needs to happen ? Is this so when my sister plays the video that she can watch the video of a wmv file even if her desktop does not have Windows media downloaded ?
