I was thinking of getting a PogoPlus. Wanted to use it for the following purposes

  • store and access files from various PCs over my home network
  • Access files from outside my home network and over the internet
  • Stream video content from my Seagate Theater Plus device

So far, it seems like I will easily be able to do the first two, but have seen conflicting reports about being able to use it with my Seagate device. One reviewer on Buy.com even specifically stated the following about it:

Seagate Free Agent Theater+ recognize it as a Media Server, but would not load a single media file from it.

Now, I have seen a forum thread about issues with Pogoplug and the similar WDTV Live device, but then how there is also ways of getting it to work. Is there also a way to get it to work with Seagate? Maybe its the same solution.

I want to be able to stream mainly .avi & .mkv files, but the .mkv format seems to be a problem according to some posts here.

I see how the Pogoplug Video device is coming out in March and am wondering if its more suitable for this. However, the suggested retail price tag of $199 is NOT something I would be interested in and/or willing to pony up for. Any insight about this?

At this point I don't think any current pogoplug including DLNA compatible to find and serve media devices. Generally DLNA compatible devices can see each other and transfer media data.

The initial pp video brochure does say it will stream to media players, but never actually mentions if it will use the DLNA protocol to do so. If it does, it will probably work with your device and many others.

Anyone at CE know if the coming video version is expected be DLNA compliant? I would also like to know, as if so I could probably send video directly to my Dish 922 satellite receiver.

UPDATE:
I did some checking and found that the current pogoplug is UPnP compliant which will send video to some devices that use UPnP protocol including freeagent theater+ and XBox360. It can be enabled in setup under
media> Stream photos, videos and music to your PS3, XBox360 and FreeAgent Theater+".

It also appears that the pogoplug video is also only UPnP and doesn't add DLNA compliance according to this article:

Too bad... I need DLNA to work with my equipment. :(

It works with a WDTV Live plus. I dont see why it wouldnt work as a NAS for yours

I setup pogoplug pro to stream to Seagate Freeagent Theater +. FAT+ recognizes the pogoplug drive as a media server. I have a few avi files there. It would play a few seconds of the file and stop. Jump to the next file and play a few seconds of it until it got to the end of the list. I have the pogoplug connected by Ethernet wire, an external portable drive, Linksys wrn2000 "N" router. FAT+ has a "N" wifi adapter. There was no other network activties when I stream the video. Netflick works fine in my network.
Is pogoplug just too slow to stream video or there are some special settings I need to look into?

I have a FAT+ as well, and truthfully, I gave up on streaming using the stock Pogoplug stuff. For me it would play some of the AVI files, but absolutely none of my MKVs.

I use other methods now, but I'll not jump directly to that.

WarheadsSE,

I am new to this Pogoplug device. Sorry for probing. Seemed like you were able to stream AVI, but I can't even do that. Looked like there isn't any buffer so the video just won't play. You gave up because of the Pogoplug not capable or problem with FAT+? Of course FAT+ can access the computer's hard drive and play video files from there. I thought with Pogoplug, I don't have to keep the computer on or physically attach the FAT+ usb storage to the computer in order to load video files from there.

@timhorton,

It's no problem. There is something in the inner workings between the Pogoplug UPnP/DLNA server and the FAT+ software for working with those types of servers that just isn't compatible for some reason. I also had issues with streaming to my LG Bluray players. MKV support just didn't seem to work for me across the board. I don't know where or care to speculate why, I just bypassed the problem all together.

You are correct however that the Pogoplug should provide you with the functionality you seek by description alone. I'm not advocating returning it, or anything else.

Look into the transcoding settings for your plug, possibly turn them off entirely to see if that helps the FAT+. I've got a lot of IT knowledge under my belt so I took an alternate route.
